SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Pepperdine senior goalkeeper Brielle Preece has been named the West Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Preece stopped a penalty kick among her four saves in the Waves' 1-0 shutout victory over fourth-ranked Santa Clara on Sunday. It was a huge game-changer in the 40th minute, as instead of Santa Clara perhaps going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Waves scored five minutes later and took the lead at the half.
The win ended Santa Clara's eight-game unbeaten streak and gave the Waves their 10th straight home win over the Broncos.
Preece could have had two shutouts on the weekend if not for an 88th-minute goal by San Francisco on Friday that ended in a 1-1 tie. Preece had four saves in both games.
The Santa Clara shutout was the 20th solo shutout of her career, which ranks fourth all-time at Pepperdine. She lowered her season GAA to 1.04. It was her sixth solo shutout and the team's seventh of the season.
