SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Thanks to sweeping San Francisco last week, Gonzaga jumped Portland to stand alone in first place in the West Coast Conference baseball standings at 8-1. The Pilots remain right near the top, though, in second place at 7-2.
San Diego stands in third place at 3-3 in conference play. The Toreros played non-conference games last week with some stiff tests in No. 12 UC Irvine and No. 14 UCLA, taking one out of three against the Bruins in extra innings.
This Week
Four Conference series are on the slate once again this weekend. Santa Clara hosts first-place Gonzaga, while second-place Portland hosts Pepperdine.
USF looks to get back on track this weekend when LMU heads to The Hilltop and in another Bay Area series, Saint Mary's hosts San Diego.
The non-conference series of the week features Pacific heading to California Baptist.
Last Week
Gonzaga took over first place in the West Coast Conference with a sweep over San Francisco, including a 14-1 result last Saturday.
Portland was at Saint Mary's last week, and won the series, taking Friday and Saturday's contests before the Gaels got one back on Sunday, 12-9.
In Malibu, the Waves took two out of three over Santa Clara, winning the first two before the Broncos headed home with a 4-3 win last Sunday.
A 10-run ninth inning propelled Pacific to a 14-11 come-from-behind win in Sunday's finale at LMU, allowing the Tigers take the series in the rubber match, as well.
In non-conference play, San Diego took one out of three at No. 14 UCLA, taking the series finale in extra innings thanks to the efforts of Heluva Good Dip West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week Austin Smith's extra-inning home run. The Toreros followed that up with a 9-8 walk-off win over UC Irvine yesterday after USD trailed 8-2 at one point.
Stat Leaders
USD's Logan Reddemann leads the league and ranks ninth in the nation in earned run average at 1.83. He's holding opposing batters to a batting average of .197, tied for first in the West Coast Conference.
Max Bayles continues to collect strikeouts for Santa Clara. He ranks fifth in the nation in strikeouts per game (15.03) and tied for 16th in strikeouts overall with 64, a leage best.
