In his first year as the Pepperdine men's basketball head coach, Paul Westphal has led the Waves to the top of the WCC at 4-0, 11-6 overall. The former NBA head coach has guided Pepperdine to upsets over nationally ranked opponents UCLA (then-#10) and Gonzaga (then-#13) this season by using a balanced scoring attack and tenacious rebounding.

The Waves have started conference play at 4-0 for the third consecutive year and are currently riding a six-game win streak.

Westphal played 12 seasons in the NBA for Boston, Phoenix, New York and Seattle, and was a five-time NBA All-Star, before embarking on a stellar coaching career. His coaching record with two NBA teams stands at 294-181 (.619), giving him one of the all-time best winning percentages in the league.
