SAN BRUNO, Calif. – West Coast Conference champion BYU picked up Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors, runner-up Santa Clara claimed Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year, and San Diego earned the first Goalkeeper of the Year honor in program history with the release of the 2019 All-WCC teams, the conference office announced Tuesday.
BYU’s Mikayla Colohan earns WCC Player of the Year honors and BYU’s Jennifer Rockwood claims WCC Coach of the Year honors in what was an historic season for the Cougars. Santa Clara’s Alex Loera and Izzy D’Aquila took Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year, respectively, while San Diego’s Amber Michel capped a record-breaking career for the Toreros as the Goalkeeper of the Year.
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's 10 head coaches.
Colohan earns Player of the Year honors after leading the WCC with 22 points on eight goals and six assists for the unbeaten Cougars. A catalyst for the nation’s No. 2 offense, Colohan is the only student-athlete with at least five goals and five assists in conference play this season. Her eight goals and six assists were both second overall in the league.
Loera picks up Defensive Player of the Year honors after a season that saw her called into action in all sorts of roles for the Broncos defense that allowed just eight goals in WCC play this season in front of a pair of goalkeepers that split time in the net. Santa Clara posted four shutouts in nine conference games and only allowed more than one goal in a shootout victory against Pepperdine and a 2-2 draw against the nation’s only unbeaten team in BYU. She becomes the first Bronco to earn the award since the 2009 season.
Michel becomes the first Torero to ever earn WCC Goalkeeper of the Year honors after leading the conference with 65 saves and 7.22 saves per game in conference play, almost two more saves per game than the next closest competitor. She posted a .765 save percentage and on October 19 broke the San Diego career saves mark. Twice this conference season Michel recorded 12 saves, the most by a goalkeeper in a single game this year.
D’Aquila is the third Bronco to earn WCC Freshman of the Year honors in the past four seasons, joining Kelsey Turnbow (2017) and Gudrun Arnardottir (2016) as recent honorees. D’Aquila led all freshman with four goals and two assists for 10 points in conference play.
Rockwood was named WCC Coach of the Year for the second-consecutive season after posting the only unbeaten season in NCAA Division I with an 18-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 conference record. Rockwood previously earned the honor in 2012, 2014 and 2018.
