SAN BRUNO, Calif. – West Coast Conference regular season champion Saint Mary’s led the way with six of the 11 2019 All-WCC First Team selections as the 2019 WCC major individual awards and All-WCC honors were announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Saint Mary’s also took home four of five awards in Co-Player of the Year Anders Engebretsen, Goalkeeper of the Year Remi Prieur, Defensive Player of the Year Filippo Zattarin and Coach of the Year Adam Cooper while San Diego’s Miguel Berry was also named Co-Player of the Year and LMU’s Noel Caliskan claimed Freshman of the Year honors.
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's eight head coaches.
Berry caps a senior season in which he leads all of NCAA Division 1 with 42 points to be named the WCC Co-Player of the Year. He also led the country with 17 total goals scored over 18 games played. In WCC action, Berry led the conference in points (16) while finishing tied for the conference-lead with seven goals scored.
Engebretsen becomes the first Gael to be named the WCC Player of the Year since 1991 – and just the second Gael overall – after a season in which the senior led the league in WCC play with seven goals and three game-winning goals. He finished second in conference play with 15 points in seven games played. Over the course of the entire season, Engebretsen was second in all of NCAA Division 1 at 2.35 points per game thanks to his 40 points in 17 games played.
Zattarin was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year after starting at center back in every game for the team that led the WCC with a 0.29 goals against average in conference play with just two goals allowed in seven matches. He also registered one assist in conference play.
Prieur repeats as the WCC Goalkeeper of the Year to become the second student-athlete to win the award twice since it was instituted in 2011. Prieur, who matches the feat done by Portland’s Paul Christensen from 2016-17, had a season in which he finished second in the NCAA in shutouts (11), ninth in goals against average (.602) and 11
th in save percentage (.818). The senior also led the league in conference play with a blistering 0.15 goals against average, .947 save percentage and five shutouts after allowing only one goal in 590:11 of action against WCC competition.
Caliskan was named the WCC Freshman of the Year after a season in which he started all seven conference games at midfield for the Lions team that finished second in the league with a 6-0-1 record. A team captain as just a freshman, the Germany native registered one assist and operated as the engine for a Lions team that advances to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years.
Cooper becomes the first coach to repeat as WCC Coach of the Year in over 10 seasons after he led the Gaels to the first 7-0-0 season in WCC history. The Gaels went 16-1-0 overall en route to earning a national seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season. It is his fourth WCC Coach of the Year honor after also claiming the award in 2018, 2011 and 2009.
