WCC Adopts Cost Containment Measures

2021 baseball and men's and women's tennis tournaments have been canceled

SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference Presidents’ Council has adopted a number of cost containment measures for the 2020-21 academic year that places the WCC in a healthier position to better navigate an unclear financial landscape due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The WCC Presidents’ Council, in conjunction with the conference office and athletic department leadership at all 10 member institutions, exhaustedly explored several options before settling on a path that ensures financial stability, mitigates risks for exposure, preserves regular-season competition and does not impact the ability for the WCC champion to receive automatic qualification to NCAA postseason play.

The cost containment measures include the cancellation of the 2021 baseball and men’s and women’s tennis tournaments, as well as a reduction in operations and services for other WCC championship events during the 2020-21 academic year.

The WCC remains committed to providing a top-tier experience with the resources provided. Preparations are underway to host eight conference championship events this academic year.

“WCC championships provide an experience for student-athletes we are all proud of,” WCC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said. “While this is not an easy decision, it is the responsible decision. We are committed to meeting the unprecedented challenges before us and are prepared for the uncertainty ahead of us. The measures in place for championship events are part of a conference office cost containment plan that ensures stability and provides a blueprint to move forward in the most responsible manner.”

At this time, these measures are only expected to impact championship events conducted in the 2020-21 academic year. The WCC continues to evaluate the best path for long term stability.
