Gonzaga’s Kispert & Suggs Sweep UCU WCC Weekly Honors

No. 1 Zags dominated No. 16 Virginia in a 3-0 week

SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its University Credit Union Men’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week for December 28, 2020.

Senior forward Corey Kispert had a record-breaking week for the top-ranked Zags. The senior scored a career-high 32 points in an impressive 98-75 victory over No. 16/15 Virginia in Fort Worth, Texas. He matched the GU program record for most makes from behind-the-arc in the win, connecting on 9-of-13 from deep.
 
Kispert totaled 77 points in three Gonzaga wins, his 25.7 point average for the week, bumped his season average to a team-high 22.4 points per outing. He made 14 three-pointers during the week at a phenomenal 60.9 percent clip. He was 28-of-40 (70.0 percent) from the field for the week.
 
The Edmonds, Wash., native, opened the week with a 27-point and seven rebound effort over Northwestern State, before scoring 18 points the following night versus NSU. Against Virginia, Kispert was 11-of-15 from the field and dished out three assists. He ended the week with six assists to one turnover. He made seven of his eight free-throws in the three Bulldog wins.
 
For his efforts, Kispert became the second Zag in as many weeks to be named NCAA “March Madness” National Player of the Week. Jalen Suggs collected the honor for the week of Dec. 21.

UCU #WCCHOOPS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – JALEN SUGGS, FR., G – GONZAGA
Jalen Suggs  continued his stellar first season with No. 1 Gonzaga this past week. He showcased an all-around talented week, totaling 39 points, 20 rebounds, 18 assists and eight steals in a trio of victories for the Zags. The freshman made 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field for the week.
 
He flirted with a triple-double in the first win over Northwestern State, scoring 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Suggs went 8-of-12 from the field in the second victory over NSU, recording 19 points. Versus No. 16 Virginia in Fort Worth, Texas, he pulled down seven rebounds again, while making seven assists to just one turnover against one of the nation’s top defenses.
