LMU’s Scott and BYU’s Lohner Collect UCU WCC Weekly Honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its University Credit Union Men’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week for February 22, 2021.

UCU #WCCHOOPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ELI SCOTT, SR., G/F – LMU
Senior guard Eli Scott led LMU to a four-game win streak including a road sweep on Tuesday and Thursday before playing BYU on Saturday.

Scott opened the week by putting the team on his shoulders and putting together a career-high 37 point performance, tying him for most points in a game for any WCC player this weekend. In all 40 minutes on the court, Scott shot 15-for-22 (.682) and grabbed six rebounds to erase a six point deficit in the final few minutes of play and hit the game-winning step-back jumper to clinch the victory.

In LMU’s second come-from-behind win, Scott led the shorthanded Lions back at San Francisco. One of only six players to see the court in the game, Scott again played all 40 minutes and scored 18 points and grabbed six more rebounds. His biggest contribution may have came at the free throw line down the stretch, where he grabbed his own offensive rebound off a miss and drew another foul for two more shots and help clinch the win.

In Saturday’s emotional senior day, playing at home for the final time after four years in an LMU uniform, Scott put together a 17-point performance and move his weekly average to 24.0 points.

For the week Scott shot 56.5 percent from the field, a percent 1.000 percent from three, and 73.1 percent from the free throw line.

Scott also set a rebounding milestone this week, surpassing 700 in his career and moving into the top 10 in program history in boards.

Also Nominated: Alex Barcello, BYU; Joey Calcaterra, San Diego; Colbey Ross, Pepperdine; Drew Timme, Gonzaga; Josip Vrakic, Santa Clara

UCU #WCCHOOPS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – CALEB LOHNER, FR., F – BYU
Freshman forward Caleb Lohner put up a career-high 19 points on Thursday at Pacific and then followed up that performance with 18 points at LMU, leading BYU to two big road wins after having 10 days off. He shot 12-for-18 from the field, including 7-for-9 from beyond the arc. Lohner continues to lead BYU in rebounding this season, pulling down a combined 16 in last week’s games. He’s sixth in the WCC in rebounding. Lohner also had four steals, three assists and one block last week. His most high-flying moment was this alley-oop dunk against Pacific.

After starting the year 0-13 from three, Caleb Lohner has connected on 16 of his last 32 attempts. He leads the WCC in three-point percentage in conference play with at least 11 attempts, hitting 12-20 for a 60% clip. Lohner has hit 9-11 from deep in the month of February.

This is the second freshman honor of the season for Lohner.
