SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its University Credit Union Men’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week for February 8, 2021.
UCU #WCCHOOPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – COLBEY ROSS, SR., G – PEPPERDINE
Senior All-American candidate Colbey Ross recorded 24 points and 12 assists and continued his assault on the WCC record books during the Waves' road win over Portland on Saturday. That was Pepperdine's only game this past week.
Ross climbed past Yoeli Childs, Jim McPhee and Bo Kimble on the conference's all-time scoring list and into sole possession of 10th place (2,034 points). Ross moved past Matthew Dellavedova and Christopher Anderson on the assist list and now has sole possession of third place (769 assists).
It was Ross' fifth career game of at least 20 points and 10 assists, and his 13th career double-double. He sank four three-pointers, giving him 203 for his career, becoming just the fourth Wave to make at least 200. Ross had just one turnover against his 12 assists and he also had three rebounds, a block and a steal.
As the Waves jumped out to a 47-35 lead at halftime over the Pilots, Ross had 14 points and eight assists and either scored or assisted on 35 points of the 47 points.
Ross is averaging 16.9 points and 7.6 assists this season.

UCU #WCCHOOPS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – JALEN SUGGS, FR., G – GONZAGA
Freshman All-American candidate Jalen Suggs led No. 1 Gonzaga to a road win at Pacific Thursday. He scored 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. The freshman made two three-pointers in the victory. He grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and made a steal.
Suggs currently leads the West Coast Conference in steals per game at 2.19. He is fifth dishing out 4.44 assists per outing. The West Saint Paul, Minn., native, is sixth in the league shooting 51.3 percent from the field, averaging 13.81 points per game, which is 12th in the WCC.
This is the eighth freshman of the week honor for Suggs so far this season and the ninth in 11 weeks for the Bulldogs.
