Portland’s Ries, Pepperdine’s Watson Claim UCU WCC Women’s Soccer Weekly Honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its University Credit Union Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for March 9, 2021.

UCU #WCCSPORTS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TARYN RIES, SR., F – PORTLAND
Senior striker Taryn Ries scored both goals in Portland's 2-0 win against the Pacific Tigers on Saturday. Ries opened the scoring in the first half, flicking on a cross from Nedya Sewan it into the right side netting. She then converted a penalty in the 58th minute to provide a cushion. Ries has now converted both her PK attempts this season and is 8-for-9 from the spot in her career. She increased her career goals total to 29 and moved into 17th place on the Portland all-time charts.

Also Nominated: Joelle Anderson, Pepperdine; Bella Folino, BYU; Kelsey Turnbow, Santa Clara

UCU #WCCSPORTS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TRINITY WATSON, JR., D – PEPPERDINE
In addition to leading the Pepperdine defense to its second consecutive WCC shutout, All-WCC first team defender Trinity Watson assisted on the game-winning goal in the 69th minute of the 1-0 victory over USF. She took the ball in her defensive end, dribbled into USF's side of the field, then played a picture-perfect through ball ahead of teammate Joelle Anderson, who finished the play for the game's only goal. Watson's defense has helped Pepperdine to outshoot the opponent in all five games this season (11-9 on Saturday, and only one of the Dons' attempts was on goal).
