Santa Clara Wins Second NCAA Championship

Notes on the WCC's Fourth NCAA Women's Soccer title




SANTA CLARA NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTABLES
  • Making its third championship game appearance – and first since 2002 – Santa Clara beat Florida State 4-1 on penalty kicks.
  • It is the second time in three all-time appearances that the Broncos have gone to overtime in the title game
    • Match vs. Florida State was tied 1-1 after regulation and both sudden victory overtime sessions
    • As the reigning NCAA Champions, the Broncos lost to WCC opponent Portland 2-1 in the second overtime period in the 2002 in the final
  • Santa Clara is the second WCC women’s soccer program to win two NCAA Championships, joining Portland (2002 & 2005)
  • The Broncos won the 2001 event with a 1-0 triumph against North Carolina
    • The Broncos 1-0 triumph vs. North Carolina in the 2001 NCAA Championship was the first-ever women’s team title in West Coast Conference history
    • Portland women’s soccer added two more NCAA Championships in 2002 (2-1, 2ot vs. Santa Clara) & 2005 (4-0 vs. UCLA)
    • BYU Women’s Cross Country won the 2020 NCAA Team Championship March 15, 2021 in Stillwater, Okla. – for the WCC’s most recent women’s team national title
  • Santa Clara has run roughshod offensively during the 2020 NCAA Tournament, outscoring opponents 11-3, 5-2 vs. ACC foes
  • Since beating unseeded Ohio State 4-1 to open the tournament, the Broncos have beaten No. 4 Arkansas (2-0), No. 14 Clemson (1-0) and No. 2 North Carolina (3-1)
  • With their 3-1 victory against UNC in the national semis, the Broncos have now taken six of the last eight meetings overall against the Tar Heels, four of five in the NCAA Tournament and three straight in the College Cup
  • In their last four NCAA Tournaments (2017-20) the Broncos own a 25-10 scoring edge (13 matches)
  • Appearing in their 30th NCAA Tournament and 11th College Cup, Santa Clara owns a postseason record of 58-25-6


 
WCC NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP NOTABLES
  • Santa Clara Women’s Soccer is the second WCC program to compete in a national championship game in the span of 42 days
  • The Broncos are the second WCC women’s program to win an NCAA Championship this season (BYU Women’s Cross Country) – marking a conference history first
  • BYU women’s cross country won the program’s fifth NCAA Team Championship March 15, 2021 in Stillwater, Okla. It is the first Women’s Cross Country NCAA team title in WCC history
  • No. 1 Gonzaga men’s basketball played for the NCAA Championship on April 5
  • No. 5 LMU beach volleyball reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championship
  • BYU’s Conner Mantz won the first individual NCAA cross country crown in WCC history March 15, 2021 in Stillwater, Okla.
  • No. 5 Pepperdine Women’s Tennis takes on No. 4 UCLA Wednesday, May 19 in the NCAA quarterfinals
  • Since 2014, seven WCC programs have reached the final four in four team sports and have reached the NCAA Championship game five times
