West Coast Conference Announces 2022 Men’s Soccer Honors

SAN MATEO, Calif. – 2022 West Coast Conference Men's Soccer Champion San Diego picked up four of the West Coast Conference’s six major awards as the WCC announced its 2022 men’s soccer postseason honors. All six individual awards and the All-WCC teams were voted on solely by the Conference’s eight coaches.

New this year is a specific position format for the All-WCC First Team, and specific only to the first team. The first team format is as follows: (3 forwards, 4 midfielders, 3 defenders, 1 goalkeeper).

Closing out the year on a five-match winning streak, San Diego captured its first WCC title since 2015 with a 1-0 win at San Francisco last Saturday. Head Coach Brian Quinn was tabbed the WCC Coach of the Year, while Trevor Dillon was named WCC Defender of the Year, Simon Duus Muller won WCC Freshman of the Year and Jason Dubrovich was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Year.

For Portland, Brandon Cambridge was tabbed WCC Offensive Player of the Year, while goalkeeper George Tasouris was the keeper who tied with Dubrovich for Co-WCC Goalkeeper of the Year.

The lone major award that did not go to San Diego or Portland was LMU's Noel Caliskan winning WCC Midfielder of the Year.

Quinn guided his Toreros to finish undefeated in WCC play for the second time in program history (2000). USD has only lost once in its last 14 matches (8-1-5), and outscored opponents, 17-4, in WCC play. USD claimed first place in the WCC and never looked back after a 4-1 victory over then-No. 7 Portland. This is Quinn's first WCC Coach of the Year accolade. The last time a USD head coach won Coach of the Year was Seamus McFadden in 2014. He won it nine times since the award's inception in 1988.

In the Conference championship-clinching victory last Saturday, Dubrovich earned his seventh shutout of the season, recording seven saves. Dubrovich notches six saves twice this season, including in the season opener against then-No. 12 Duke. He completed the regular season with a goal-against average of 1.11 and a 0.747 save percentage. His save percentage and 59 total saves both ranked second in the WCC. Dubrovich became the first Toreros to win WCC Goalkeeper of the Year honors.

Dillon started 16 of 17 games played for the Toreros. He scored three goals on six shots - four on goal - including one game-winning goal when he notched the only goal in a 1-0 win at Gonzaga. One of his other tallies came during USD's 4-1 win over Portland to take over first place. Dillon is the first Torero to win Defender of the Year since Darragh Vieyra in 2015. Muller was one of many freshmen to produce immediately and make an impact for the Toreros in 2022. Starting nine of 12 games played, Muller's season production was identical to Dillon, scoring three goals on six shots - four on goal - including a gamewinner in a 2-0 win at Pacific. Muller is USD's first Freshman of the Year since Aaron Frey in 2017.

Cambridge was the WCC's leading scorer in 2022. He led the WCC with 30 points, which ranks tied for sixth in the nation. He also paced the league with 12 goals, which tied for 7th in the nation. His efforts helped UP finish the regular season ranked second in the country in goals per game. Previously named to the WCC All-Freshman Team in 2020, Cambridge is Portland's first Player of the Year since Eddie Sanchez in 2016. His efforts helped Portland earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, as well as hosting a first-round match.

Tasouris won WCC University Credit Union Defensive Player of the Week honors three times this season. He boasted a GAA of 1.02 that topped the WCC. After being named to the 2021 All-WCC Second Team, Tasouris is Portland's first WCC Goalkeeper of the Year award winner since Paul Christensen won it in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2016. He garnered a season-best six saves during a 3-3 tie against then-No. 21 Indiana. He recorded a league-high eight shutouts in 2022, including back-to-back shutouts to close out the regular season.

Caliskan adds to his trophy case after being named the 2021 WCC Offensive Player of the Year, 2020 Player of the Year and the 2019 WCC Freshman of the Year. Also named to the All-WCC First Team for the third time in his career, Caliskan started all 18 games for the Lions, scoring 10 points on three goals and four assists. Caliskan scored in his final collegiate game last Saturday during LMU's 3-0 victory over Gonzaga.
