SAN MATEO, Calif. – Alex Fowler (Portland) is the University Credit Union West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, with Veronica Sheffey (San Diego) collecting UCU WCC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week accolades, the league announced on Monday, Jan. 2. It is the first honor of the season for both players.

UCU WCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ALEX FOWLER, JR., F – PORTLAND
Alex Fowler guided Portland to a pair of conference road victories last week after putting up 22.0 points on 69.2-percent shooting, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.0 steals. The junior went for a game-high 24 points (11-14 FG) and five rebounds, while adding five assists in a 70-61 victory at LMU. With Fowler’s 20-5-5 performance vs. the Lions, she became the 19^th Division I player this season to put up those numbers in a game. Just up the road two days later at Pepperdine, Fowler had another 20-point effort, finishing with 20, and pulled down a game-high-tying seven rebounds to go with six assists and two steals, helping the Pilots start WCC action with a 4-0 record for the first time since 1996-97.

UCU WCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – VERONICA SHEFFEY, FR., G – SAN DIEGO
Veronica Sheffey averaged 11.0 points on 50.0-percent shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in San Diego’s victories over Saint Mary’s and Pacific last week. The guard enjoyed her best game of her young career with a personal-best 17 points (6-10 FG) and six rebounds, while chipping in two assists, one steal and one blocked shot against the Gaels. Sheffey was impressive in the fourth quarter and overtime, scoring 16 of her 17 points during that span, which included a personal 10-0 run, and blocking a shot that forced overtime. Her performance helped USD to a 69-65 win. Two days later vs. the Tigers, Sheffey closed the calendar year with five points, two rebounds and four assists, helping the Toreros to an 84-74 victory.
