SAN MATEO, Calif. – Saint Mary’s guards Logan Johnson and Aidan Mahaney were named the University Credit Union West Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Monday, Jan. 16. The award is Johnson’s first of 2022-23, with Mahaney securing his third straight award and WCC-best sixth honor this season.

Logan Johnson helped Saint Mary’s to a pair of victories last week – a 76-62 home win over LMU and a 78-61 road win at nearby San Francisco – by averaging 21.5 points on 63.0-percent shooting (17-27 FG), 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocked shots. To open the week, Johnson nailed 7-of-12 of his attempts from the field en route to 19 points to go with six boards, five assists, zero turnovers and one steal in 31 minutes against the Lions. Then in SMC’s road tilt at USF, Johnson filled the stat sheet again, turning in a game-high 24 points (10-15 FG), seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 39 minutes of action, while holding San Francisco’s leading scorer, Khalil Shabazz to six points on 1-of-11 shooting.

UCU WCC MEN'S BASKETBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – AIDAN MAHANEY, FR., G – SAINT MARY’S
Aidan Mahaney averaged 23.0 points (.514 FG, .467 3FG, 1.000 FT), 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocked shots during a week in which Saint Mary’s defeated LMU at home, 76-62, and San Francisco on the road, 78-61. Against the Lions, Mahaney scored a career-high-tying 25 points (10-20 FG), which included 15 in the first half, marking the most he has had in any period this season. He also added three rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. To cap his week, Mahaney posted another 20-point effort, this time scoring 21 points behind a 5-for-7 effort from three-point distance, while grabbing five rebounds against the Dons.
