This Week in WCC Baseball - May 16

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Diego won the 2024 West Coast Conference Baseball Regular Season title last week, and five teams have punched their ticket into the WCC Baseball Tournament. There is one weekend left in the regular season with one spot left in the bracket and seedings up for grabs.  

After the Toreros, Portland, Saint Mary's, Gonzaga and Santa Clara have all punched their ticket into the Conference tournament. The Pilots and Gaels are tied for second in the league at 16-5, while the Zags aren't far behind at 14-7. LMU and Pepperdine are in contention for the sixth and final seed. 

This Week
Four Conference series are on the slate once again for the final weekend. The No. 2 seed will be on the line this week, as well as a first-round bye in the tournament, when Saint Mary's heads to Portland this weekend.

The Waves are vying for a spot in the tournament, and they will have to do it in Spokane when Pepperdine treks to Gonzaga this weekend. LMU hosts San Francisco this weekend as the Lions are also trying to punch their ticket this weekend. 

The fourth series of the weekend features Pacific hosting Santa Clara.  

Last Week
San Diego concluded the regular season winning 26 of its last 29, including another WCC sweep en route to winning the 2024 WCC Regular Season title. The Dons swept USF on the road to claim the crown and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. 

Portland swept Pepperdine last weekend, including a 23-3 game 1 win, to remain in contention for a first-round bye in next week's tournament. The Pilots knocked off Washington last Tuesday, as well.  

Saint Mary's held serve in its battle for the No. 2 seed with a home sweep over Pacific. The Gaels beat the Tigers in the third game, 22-7. 

Santa Clara took two out of three over LMU, including a walk-off win in the series opener. The 11-2 victory in the series finale allowed the Broncos to celebrate their bid into the WCC Tournament. 

Stat Leaders
Christian Almanza of Saint Mary's and Jakob Christian at San Diego are the two power leaders for the WCC this season. In slugging percentage, Christian and Almanza are tied for 12th in the nation (.822). In home runs, the pair are also tied nationally in that category - No. 13 with 22 home runs each. 

As a team. Saint Mary's ranks 23rd in slugging percentage (.531). San Diego is 10th in earned run average (4.06). The Torero pitching staff is also No. 20 in strikeouts per game (10.3).  

Portland pitching continues to compile strikeouts. Nick Brinks ranks tied for ninth with 104, while Sam Stuhr is next with 86 that ranks second among WCC pitchers. 

LMU has been swiping bags all season, currently ranked tied for 16th in the nation with 103 stolen bases in 2024.
