San Francisco’s Candy Edokpaigbe and Gonzaga’s Lauren Whittaker Repeat as West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Award Winners

Edokpaigbe voted Player of the Week, Whittaker collects third freshman of the week in four weeks

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the second consecutive week, San Francisco guard Candy Edokpaigbe and Gonzaga forward Lauren Whittaker collected West Coast Conference women’s basketball weekly honors. Edokpaigbe was voted the West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Whittaker was named the West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week. The honor for Whittaker is her third in four weeks.

Candy Edokpaigbe (Naples, Italy) earned conference honors for the second consecutive week after guiding San Francisco to a pair of wins last week. The Dons are on a four-game winning streak. She averaged 19.5 points and shot 73.9 percent (19-of-23) in victories over Lehigh and CSU Monterey Bay. The sophomore scored a team-high 25 points and connected on a career-best 11 field goals while adding five rebounds and two blocks in the Dons’ five-point victory over Lehigh. Edokpaigbe was efficient in limited time in USF’s 40-point win over CSU Monterey Bay, scoring 14 points in 14 minutes on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. She ranks second in the West Coast Conference in scoring, averaging 18.6 points per contest. Edokpaigbe has topped the 20-point mark in three of San Francisco’s last four games.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – LAUREN WHITTAKER, F – GONZAGA
Lauren Whittaker (Canterbury, New Zealand) was honored as the freshman of the week or the second consecutive week and third time in the first four weeks of the season. She averaged 25.0 points and 9.0 rebounds for Gonzaga earning All-Tournament Team recognition in the Coconut Hoops event in Fort Myers, Florida. Gonzaga split its two games in the tournament with a four-point win over Marquette and a four-point defeat to Indiana. In the victory over Marquette, Whittaker registered 23 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Against Indiana, the forward posted 27 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in 26 minutes of action. Whittaker leads the West Coast Conference in scoring (19.0 pg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg).
