SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 24, 2018.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TREY WERTZ, FR., G – SANTA CLARA
Freshman guard Trey Wertz averaged 19.0 points on 56 percent shooting, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in leading the Broncos to a pair of wins last week.
Wertz was impressive in Tuesday’s 102-92 double overtime upset of USC, posting a game-high 28 points, including 17 of the team’s final 19, on 10 of 17 shooting from the floor, The freshman guard gave Santa Clara the lead for good at 89-87 with a layup to open the second extra session. After missing his final two shots from the floor in regulation, he proceeded to hit 5 of 6 along with going 6-for-7 at the free-throw line in the two overtimes.
The Charlotte, N.C., native had his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high tying 10 assists to facilitate a balanced scoring attack in Friday’s dominating 77-56 win over Idaho. He keyed the offense of the Broncos who posted a season-best 24 assists and season-low six turnovers.
