2019 West Coast Conference Cross Country Championships

VAN NUYS, Calif. – BYU men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the field to capture men’s and women’s West Coast Conference Championships. It marks the second straight season the Cougars have won the men’s and women’s races. BYU entered the event with both squads ranked in the top-5 nationally with the men ranked No. 2 and the women ranked No. 4.
WOMEN’S 6K CHAMPIONSHIP RACE NOTABLES | COMPLETE RESULTS
- No. 4 BYU finished with 18 points, matching the best team score in WCC Championship history. Portland tallied 18 points in 1987.
- The Cougars posted identical team scores of 18 in the men’s and women’s races
- This is the third WCC Championship won by BYU (2014, 18-19)
- BYU junior Whittni Orton (19:49.27) won the individual title, edging 2018 individual winner and teammate Erica Birk-Jarvis (19:50)
- Cougars joining Orton and Birk-Jarvis on the All-WCC First Team: Courtney Wayment, Olivia Hoj, Anna Camp, WCC Freshman of the Year Anastaysia Davis, Sara Musselman and Sadie Sargent.
- Only one WCC student-athlete has ever won back-to-back individual women’s titles – LMU’s Tara Erdmann (2010-11)
- Portland posted its second straight runner-up finish to BYU with 84 points. The Pilots won the 2016 title
- Eight Cougars posted top-10 finishes and all 10 finished in the top-15
- San Francisco’s Aoibhe Richardson finished fourth after posting a fifth-place showing as a junior when competing for Portland
- Gonzaga’s Claire Manley finished sixth overall to earn All-WCC First Team honors
- BYU’s Diljeet Taylor earned WCC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year
- This year is the 35th running of the WCC Women’s Cross Country Championship.
MEN’S 8K CHAMPIONSHIP RACE NOTABLES | COMPLETE RESULTS
- No. 2 BYU finished with 18 points, matching the score posted by its women’s team
- It is the fifth consecutive championship captured by the Cougars
- This is the seventh WCC Championship won by BYU (2011, 13, 15-19)
- All-American BYU sophomore Conner Mantz won the individual title for BYU finishing with a time of 23:34, edging teammates Jacob Heslington (23:36) and Daniel Carney (23:39)
- Gonzaga sophomore James Mwara finished fourth overall
- Three Pilots cracked the top-10: 6. Reuben Kiprono 8. Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse and 10. Michael Teran-Solano
- BYU placed four in the top-five and six in the top-10
- No. 12 Portland posted its fifth straight runner-up finish with 51 points
- Gonzaga’s Riley Moore captured WCC Freshman of the Year honors, finishing 22nd overall
- This is the 45th running of the WCC Men’s Cross Country Championship. BYU and Portland have combined to win the last 41 WCC titles, headlined by an unprecedented 32 straight for the Pilots (1979-2010).
