Five Selected In MLS SuperDraft

PORTLAND RELEASE  |  SAN DIEGO RELEASE

SAN BRUNO - Five from the West Coast Conference were drafted in the 2020 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, headlined by No. 7 overall draft pick Miguel Berry of San Diego.

Berry was picked seventh by the Columbus Crew with Pacific's Jonathan Jiminez also being picked in the first round by Chicago Fire with the 26th overall pick. Second round selections were Portland's Rey Ortiz (FC Cincinnati, 29th overall) and Saint Mary's Remi Prieur (Columbus Crew, 47th) while his Gaels teammate Anders Engebretsen was selected with the first pick of the fourth round by FC Dallas.

San Diego's Berry came tied for the highest MLS draft pick in school history as the forward was selected seventh overall in the first round of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. Berry, an All-American, WCC Co-Player of the Year and Hermann MAC Award semifinalist this past season, matches Guillermo Jara (1996, LA Galaxy) for the highest a Torero has ever been drafted by an MLS team. Berry is also the first USD draftee since goalkeeper Thomas Olsen was selected in the third round in 2018.

A native of Barcelona, Spain and product of Poway High School, Berry completed the 2019 regular season in a tie for the nation's lead in goals (17) and was first in points (42). The Academic All-American and All-WCC First Team honoree finished the year tied for fourth in goals and second in points after postseason play. Over the course of his USD career, Berry scored 38 goals in 72 matches (69 starts) and tallied 92 points. He is only one of four Toreros in program history with 90+ career points while his 38 goals are third-most.

Ortiz's selection marks the third consecutive season that a Portland Pilot was selected in the MLS SuperDraft. Ortiz, a midfielder, led the Pilots with 13 points this season, which came on three goals and seven assists. He ended his career No. 7 all-time in program history with 24 overall assists, and his 13 assists as a sophomore in 2017 missed matching a program single-season record by one and ranked No. 3 in the nation.

Ortiz earned All-American honors in 2017, and he was selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch list twice. In 2017 and 2018 Ortiz was named to the all-west region first team, and he earned all-west region second ream recognition this fall. Ortiz was also voted to the All-WCC First Team in 2017 and 2019, and he was voted to the all-conference second team as a junior
