Pacific Upsets to Make it to Day Two of the Beach Volleyball Championship

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS 

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Day one of the 2021 West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championship is in the books with LMU, Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s, and Pacific advancing.
 
The matches began with an upset as Pacific topped Santa Clara, 3-2. No. 5 Pacific took the first, second, and four pairs courts to claim the victory.


No. 1 LMU and No. 2 Pepperdine will face off in the opening match on May 1, both with a 2-0 record on the opening day of the championship. No. 3 Saint Mary’s and No. 5 Pacific will face at 10:30 am.

DAY ONE CAPSULE RECAPS

No. 1 Loyola Marymount (1-0)
The Lions defeated Pacific, 5-0, in the fourth match to advance. LMU swept the match, with Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marlof leading on Court One, 21-12, 21-16. On Court Four, Darby Dunn and Jacinda Ramirez took a dominating win, 21-9, 21-9.

No. 2 Pepperdine (2-0)
Pepperdine swept the competition in the opening day of the conference championship. First, the Waves downed Portland, 5-0. Pepperdine continued the daily sweep with a 5-0 win over No. 3 Saint Mary’s. The Jasmin Suarez and Sienna Young pair dominated on Court Three, 21-14, 21-10.

No. 3 Saint Mary's (2-1)
Saint Mary’s opened competition with a 5-0 sweep of No. 6 San Francisco. Morgan Kendrick and Boo Laird claimed a strong victory on Court Four with a 21-14, 21-15 win. In their second match of the day, the Gaels were defeated by No. 2 Pepperdine, 5-0. Saint Mary’s bounced back with a strong victory over Santa Clara to advance. Chandler Cowell and Elena Baka powered through on Court One, 21-16, 21-11.

No. 5 Pacific (2-1)
The fifth-seeded Tigers started the day with a 3-2 upset over the Broncos in the starting match. Lucy Carpenter and Hania Taduran claimed the deciding point on Court Four, 21-17, 21-18, 15-13. After a 5-0 defeat to LMU, the Tigers finished the day with a 4-1 victory over No. 6 San Francisco.
