SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the second time this season, Brandin Podziemski (Santa Clara) and Aidan Mahaney (Saint Mary’s) are this week’s University Credit Union West Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively. The duo was also honored after the first week of 2022-23 back on Nov. 14.
 
UCU WCC MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – BRANDIN PODZIEMSKI, SO., G – SANTA CLARA
Brandin Podziemski collected his second weekly award of 2022-23 after averaging 23.0 points on 52.9 percent shooting, including 41.2 percent from behind the three-point arc, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in 38.0 minutes, propelling the Broncos to wins over Wyoming and Sacramento State. In a neutral-site contest vs. the Cowboys, Podziemski tallied his fourth double-double of the season with a team-high-tying 19 points and 10 boards. Then to cap his week, the Wisconsin native exploded for a game-high 27 points on the strength of five treys against the Hornets. During SCU’s game-defining 10-0 second-half run against Sacramento State, Podziemski scored eight points to help deliver the seven-point victory.

UCU WCC MEN'S BASKETBALL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – AIDAN MAHANEY, FR., G – SAINT MARY’S
For the second time in four weeks, Aiden Mahaney is the league’s top freshman after posting 12.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 25.5 minutes in games against New Mexico and vs. No. 1 Houston. In a four-point defeat to the Lobos, Mahaney finished with 11 points and two rebounds, and was one of two Gaels to not have a negative plus/minus rating (0). Then vs. the top-ranked Cougars, the guard logged 14 points, two rebounds and four assists (against just one turnover). En route to his final point total, Mahaney made 4-of-8 from three-point distance to outshoot Houston as a team (3-11 3FG) in what ended in a 53-48 loss for SMC.
