SAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced Pepperdine’s Madison Shields as its 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee. Shields has enjoyed an impressive career for the Waves in both volleyball and beach volleyball.
Established in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service, and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
Shields left her mark on the Pepperdine record book, ranking fourth all-time in reception percentage (.959), ninth in digs (1152), and 14
th in digs per set (2.87). The libero was a two-time all-WCC selection and the 2020 WCC Libero of the Year.
Playing in all 109 matches of her time at Pepperdine, Shields played 402 sets and grossed 1,152 digs (2.87 digs/set), 36 aces, and 204 assists.
Shields also represented the Waves on the sand, earning AVCA All-American honors in her first season of beach volleyball. Playing in the one-pairs, Shields was an all-WCC first-team selection in 2022.
As a biology major, Shields posted a 3.94 GPA and is a two-time WCC All-Academic selection. She was named Pepperdine Athletics Female “Wave of the Year” for her outstanding contributions in spirit and service to the athletics programs and the university community.
Conferences selected up to two nominees each from the pool of institutional nominees. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
The selection committee will determine the top three honorees from each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will then choose the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year. The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named this fall.
