West Coast Conference Imposes Fine On Oregon State For Violation of Court Storming Policy

Financial penalty to be donated to SoCal Fire Fund to support relief efforts for the devastating Southern California wildfires

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference announced it has imposed a fine on Oregon State University for a violation of the WCC’s court storming policy. The violation occurred at the conclusion of the Jan. 16 men’s basketball game between Oregon State and Gonzaga at Gill Coliseum on the Oregon State campus.

Oregon State’s fine is $5,000 for a first offense under the Conference’s court storming policy. Fines levied by the Conference will be donated to the SoCal Fire Fund to assist in the relief efforts for those impacted by the devastating wildfires in Southern California.

“The West Coast Conference prioritizes the safety of everyone involved in its events,” West Coast Conference Commissioner Stu Jackson said. “While we appreciate the passion and support of our programs, we have protocols in place that prohibit fans from accessing the court prior to the teams and the officials exiting the floor to ensure the safety of all those involved with the game. The financial penalty associated with this violation will be donated to the wildfire relief efforts in Southern California. So many people have been impacted by these devastating fires, including two of our member institutions. The imposed fine will contribute to these relief efforts.”

The WCC policy related to court storming and associated penalties was adopted in November of 2023 to assure members of the visiting team, coaches, officials and administrative staffs have the opportunity to safely leave the playing surface prior to fans entering the court. A penalty structure was established. Subsequent offenses will result in a fine of up to $25,000 (second offense), and up to $50,000 (third offense) in the same season.
