Pepperdine’s Shorna Preston and San Diego’s Ayla Williams Earn West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

Preston honored as Player of the Week, Williams named Freshman of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Pepperdine’s Shorna Preston was named the West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and San Diego’s Ayla Williams was voted the West Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
 
WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – SHORNA PRESTON, JR., F, – PEPPERDINE
Shorna Preston (Gold Coast, Australia) guided Pepperdine to double-digit wins over California Baptist (69-58) at home and Fresno State (65-45) on the road this past week, as the Waves improved to 6-2 for their best eight-game start to a season in 19 years. Pepperdine also opened the 2006-07 campaign 6-2. Preston posted a pair of double-doubles for the week. In the win over CBU on Wednesday, the forward finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. On Saturday, Preston helped lead Pepperdine to its first ever road win against Fresno State with 16 points, 12 rebounds, a pair of steals and a pair of blocks. She averaged 18.5 points and 12.5 rebounds for the week. Preston leads the West Coast Conference in rebounding at 9.1 rpg.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK – AYLA WILLIAMS, F – SAN DIEGO
Aylan Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded the first two double-doubles of her collegiate career for San Diego as the Toreros split their two games this past week against Binghamton and Utah State. She totaled 34 rebounds in the two games. Williams finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds against the Bearcats on Wednesday. The forward then posted a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 14 points in San Diego’s win over the Aggies on Sunday. Her 18-rebound performance on Sunday is the most by an individual in a game in the conference this season.
