SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Top seed LMU and second seed Pepperdine finished the day unblemished to advance through the bracket during the first day of the 2025 West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Tournament held at Ocean Park Beach in Santa Monica, California.
Five teams remain in contention for the West Coast Conference crown heading into the final five duals on Friday. All five duals on Friday will be broadcast live, with the first four on
ESPN+ and the championship dual on
ESPNU.
LMU, ranked No. 4 in the latest national poll, cruised to a 5-0 win over No. 4 seed Santa Clara all in straight sets, in its lone match of the day. No. 2 seed Pepperdine defeated No. 7 seed Pacific, 5-0, in straight sets in its first dual of the tournament, setting up a showdown with No. 3 seed Saint Mary’s in the afternoon.
The Gaels posted a 4-1 win over No. 6 seed Portland earlier in the day to set up a rematch of their first meeting with Pepperdine in the West Coast Challenge in Santa Cruz in March. The Waves took that matchup, 5-0.
The Waves struck first in Thursday’s rematch, with Kate Clermont and McKenna Thomas earning a 21-14, 21-12 win at No. 1. Emma Eden and Ella Foti then posted the win at No. 3 (21-17, 21-17) to give Pepperdine a 2-0 advantage. With courts 2 and 5 heading to a third set, Emi Erickson and Marley Johnson clinched the dual with a 21-16, 21-13 win on court 4.
The victory sets up another rematch from the West Coast Challenge, as Pepperdine and LMU continue their PCH rivalry on Friday with the two beach volleyball powers meeting at 9:45 a.m. for a spot in the championship dual. LMU took the previous meeting this year, 4-1.
No. 4 seed Santa Clara opened competition on Thursday with a 5-0 win over No. 5 seed San Francisco. The two will meet again to open competition on Friday at 8:30 a.m., as the Dons rebounded with a 4-1 win over Portland later in the day on Thursday to eliminate the Pilots from competition.
No. 7 seed Pacific was also eliminated from contention with losses to Pepperdine and Portland on Thursday.
Following the meeting between the Broncos and the Dons at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, LMU and Pepperdine will square off at 9:45. The winner of that dual will advance straight into the championship dual, while the non-advancing team will play at 12:15 p.m. At 11:00 a.m., Saint Mary’s will face the winner of the Santa Clara-San Francisco dual. The winner of that dual will advance to play at 12:15 p.m. for a spot in the championship dual.
