SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Joel Foxwell (Melbourne, Australia) from Portland has been named an Oscar Robertson Men’s Basketball National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the group announced on Tuesday.
In addition to the national recognition, Foxwell also collected West Coast Conference Player and Co-Freshman of the Week accolades this week, giving him seven conference weekly awards this season.
Foxwell led the Pilots to the best win in school history and a home sweep of then-No. 6 Gonzaga and Seattle U last week. In Wednesday's 87-80 win over the Bulldogs, he finished with 27 points, four rebounds and eight assists in 39 minutes. Foxwell shot 11-for-18 from the field and also collected a steal. He battled through cramps in the final minutes against Gonzaga, continuing to battle on the court through the discomfort. In last Saturday's 54-53 victory against the Redhawks, he posted five points, eight rebounds, eight assists and two steals. He hit a clutch trey in the final minute to set up the game-winner and tied a season best in rebounds. He averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.5 steals over the two games.
The Pilot is one of five national honorees along with Dylan Andrews (Boise State), Marcus Banks Jr. (UMass), Quadir Copeland (NC State) and Bennett Stirtz (Iowa).
The West Coast Conference has now matched its 2024-25 season total of USBWA national honorees now with four on the season - Braden Huff (Gonzaga), Graham Ike (Gonzaga) and Paulius Murauskas (Saint Mary's).
The USBWA's national player of the week program has been affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy since the 2009-10 season. Prior to the 2024-25 season, the USBWA had recognized just one player each week. Each Tuesday during the regular season, designated USBWA board members select five standouts from the 31 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized. The selections are chosen from a list of the conferences that named a player of the week on Monday.
