Entering the West Coast Conference Baseball Tournament as the No. 5 seed, Saint Mary's went on a roll and won its second straight conference baseball tournament before a memorable run in the NCAA Tournament.
The Gaels went to the Los Angeles Regional to face the No. 1 overall seed UCLA, and they beat the Bruins not only once but twice. SMC made national headlines as the first team to hand the No. 1 overall seed a loss in its first tournament game and then going on to knock out the top seed later in the regional. The Gaels advanced to their first regional final in program history as a result.
During the NCAA Tournament, Diego Castellanos set the West Coast Conference record for hitting streak at 39 games.
Saint Mary's run started with a come-from-behind win in the first round of the conference tournament, capped by a nine-run eighth inning, to get past No. 4 seed Pepperdine. The Gaels then beat No. 1 seed and West Coast Conference regular season champion Gonzaga the next day. San Francisco gave the Gaels all they could handle, pushing the championship to the if-necessary game before the Gaels eventually prevailed.
Gonzaga and Saint Mary's both received votes in the final national rankings for the year.
Regular season champion Gonzaga nearly swept the all-conference awards with Mark Machtolf winning Coach of the Year, Mikey Bell winning Player of the Year, Karsten Sweum winning Pitcher of the Year and Landon Hood winning Freshman of the Year. Sweum threw a no-hitter at San Francisco to clinch the regular season title for the Bulldogs.
