Head Coach Clive Charles, POR Soccer-Responses

1 . Is the WCC the best in the country for soccer (women and men)? And what schools on both sides do you find the most troubling to play?
I think the WCC is one of the best, without a doubt. On the women's side, Santa Clara is always well organized, Pepperdine has become difficult, and San Diego is tough at their place. We always have great games with San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara. Our league is difficult every single wee, no matter who you're playing.

2. What were your feelings when Sinclair was unable to be released by Canada for the UP and Santa Clara game, but Wagner was able to make it down? Is the game a different result if Sinclair plays?
It was important for Christine to be where she was. I'll never make a player feel bad for representing their country. We don't know if she would have made the game against Santa Clara different, but she's a big part of our team.

3. The WCC has some great forwards....Casey, Walker,Jacqua, Coiner, Torres. Who do you think of the 2002 class will make an impact at the next level?
That's a tough question - they have to first make that level, and to have an impact right away would be difficult for any of those players.

4. Coach, it has been great to see you on the sidelines this year, especially in light of the events of the past year in regards to your health. How much help has soccer been in your recovery?
It's meant everything. Being around my teams has brought smiles. I would have been in trouble without those players and coaches and their constant support.

5. Is it true that some of your older alumni Goal Keepers get lucky once in awhile? Best Regards an old friend...Bob
no answer!!

6. Seriously Clive, who is really answering these questions? Nyla, Big'n, Garrett, or Tom? (from Kylee Barton)
no answer - just giggled

7. Having worked at the University of Portland for many years and in the WCC for many more, I have had the tremendous priviledge of watching Clive Charles coach. He is a great communicator and as passionate a competitor as I have ever seen. Mostly, I marvel at the loyalty he inspires from his players and coaches as well as all those associated with his program. Clive, how do you achieve this kind of passionate loyalty and love from those you work with? (Kelly Graves, head coach of Gonzaga's women's basketball team)
I treat all of those people as friends, and that's how you treat people. I don't treat them as co-workers, I treat them as I want to be treated. The same goes for my players. When they leave the University of Portland, they leave as friends.
