Head Coach Jennifer Petrie - USD Volleyball Responses

1. With the non-conference schedule wrapping up, what is your assessment of the team and how they have performed so far?

At this point, I am very happy with the team's performance in the pre-season. We have experienced some early successes with wins over Texas, Northwestern and South Carolina. I would also say that our match against Long Beach was an early success. The team has come to realize that we can compete with any team at any level. That confidence will carry on to our conference schedule.

2. Noel Frohman has played great in the beginning part of the season. Do you think she can win the WCC Player of the year?

Noel has consistently been a great contributor to our program. Her first and primary goal is that the team wins. There are a lot of excellent players in the WCC, and Noel certainly is one of those athletes. Whether or not she can win the WCC Player of the Year award will depend on the outcome of a few key matches, primarily the Pepperdine and Santa Clara matches.

3. Who do you think will be the toughest team you face from here on out?

As we look towards the beginning of conference play, I think that each team we face in the WCC deserves respect for their program's accomplishments. Of course, with Pepperdine receiving the preseason WCC ranking of #1, our team knows the importance of winning such a big match. Pepperdine has played an extremely tough pre-season schedule and they are well prepared for conference play.

4. You guys played great in the first round of last year's playoffs. Do you think this year's team can take it a step further?

Last year's performance in the NCAA tournament has already impacted our program this year. Our confidence is high and we feel that we can compete with anyone. Beating Santa Barbara in a 5 game match last year helped us in our first big victory of the year over Texas. Every year our expectations grow, and this year we are striving to win a WCC Championship and to take another step in the NCAA tournament.

5. Is the libero good for women's volleyball?

The libero position has created another specialized area on the court that has raised the over-all level of play in women's volleyball. Having your best defensive player on the court for six rotations allows a team to improve their transition game and serve receive.

6. Do you think that San Diego can compete with Pepperdine and Santa Clara for the WCC title?

Absolutely.
