Head Coach Dick Davey, Santa Clara Men's Basketball-Responses

1. Hi Dick--tell me a little bit about some of the new players playing well for SCU this year?
We really like all of our newcomers this year and I think each and every one of them have a real chance to be major contributors to our program. I am really encouraged by their effort and attitude and nearly every players is earning good experience this season. I really like our group of guys.

2. RE: WCC men's tourney 3/7-3/10. I understand that the tourney rules have changed to protect the 4 highest ranking teams. Can you explain how it now works?
I think the tournament format of providing the top seeds with the best chances for success helps ensure we have the best teams in a position to make the NCAA Tournament. What I really like most about the tournament format is that all eight teams have a chance to participate. I am in favor of just about any tournament format that ensures that everyone can be involved.

3. As the elder statesmen among the WCC coaches, how do you think the league has progressed in your years as head coach?
I would say there has been tremendous improvement from top to bottom of the quality of the teams in our league during the time I've been at Santa Clara. Every year, I think we see everyone get a little stronger. In the past, I don't think that has necessarily been the case. Gonzaga has really been the team that has stood out recently, along with Pepperdine. But, I think the future really bodes well for any of the remaining teams to rise to the top at any point in time.

4. You've had a lot of great players at SCU. Who is your favorite player that you've coached?
I really don't like to rank players who I have coached. I can truly say I have not had many players here at Santa Clara who I think of negatively. I really enjoy the type of people we have here, the character our players exhibit and the relationships we have been able to create.

5. There seems to be a lot of parity in the WCC this year. Where do you see the Broncos in the league standings at the end of the season?
As I stated earlier, I think any team in the league has a chance to rise to the top of the conference and that has probably not been the case in the past, even two or three years ago. Everybody is improving their program and I think it is getting harder and harder for those at the top to defend their position. We all need to just continue to work hard to improve because I know that each of the other seven coaching staffs and players have the same thing in mind.

6. Do you enjoy coaching as much now as you did in your early years of coaching?
You know, I really do. I'm not so sure that if I was someplace other than Santa Clara that I'd be able to say that. I have been fortunate to be at a place that I love being and doing something that I enjoy doing. You really have to enjoy what you do and I certainly do. I also am really appreciative of the fact that I have a great staff. They do a great job and that makes my job that much more enjoyable.
