Head Coach Paul Westphal, Pepperdine Men's Basketball-Responses

1. This Waves team is last in the WCC in scoring and field goal percentage defense. Do you attribute that to the many injuries and health problems, or are there other factors?

I have to put things off on injuries, but the fact remains that we only have one starter...Terrance Johnson...playing in his natural position. There is more of a disadvantage of having players play out of position defensively than offensively. The lack of depth that results from losing three key players effects the style of defense that we can play and keeps us from being able to play to the strengths of the players we have left on our active roster.

2. What are the main differences coaching at the NBA level and at the collegiate level. Do you find it easier coaching at the collegiate level because the NBA is supposedly a players league?

Basketball is basketball. When things are going well at any level that seems like the easiest level and vice versa. The obvious differences between the NBA and the college game such as the number of games, recruiting versus selecting players, limitations on zone defenses, media exposure, etc...they all blur into insignificance when the competition starts.

3. What has it been like coaching your son at the collegiate level?

I have been very happy for Michael and proud of him. Because of his mature approach and outlook, it has been one of the best experiences of my life. However, since it almost never works for a father to coach his son in basketball, I would advise anybody else against coaching their son in basketball if at all possible.

4. Since you are a former player and have seen plenty of talent, do you see any players on your team with the ability to play at the next level. Good luck in the conference tournament.

It is a big jump to the NBA. Just about all of our players dream of making that jump. A few have a chance, but it is a long shot for the best of them.

5. Hey coach, what is it going to take for the Waves to make a run in the WCC Tournament?

We have to tighten up our defense, particularly our rebounding, and move the ball like we did in our game at San Diego. We don't need to play over our head to win the tournament, but we cannot withstand an off game by any of our key players.

6. Coach, you've had some tough luck with injuries this season, but it seems like the program is heading in the right direction with a talented freshman class and solid sophomores and juniors. What kind of things can we expect from the Pepperdine team in the future?

I am very optimistic about our team in the future. With the return of Glen McGowan, Jesse Pinegar becoming eligible and the addition of Jarrad Henry and Wendell White to go along with Derick Grubb, David Patten and Robert Turner...we don't expect to be outrebounded very often next year. Add to that mix Alex Acker and Terrance Johnson plus some freshmen redshirts who are in our program and we figure to be better in every way next season.

7. What is Charles Barkley like?

When I coached him he had two overwhelming characteristics--he was a fantastic competitor and a clown. Now, he is just a clown. Just kidding... Actually, he is one of the most thoughtful, interesting and charming people that I have ever met, but you better be able to take a joke when he is around!

8. Who has been your favorite player to coach at the NBA level and the collegiate level and why?

I have been fortunate to coach so many quality people at both levels that I really cannot single anyone out.
