Head Coach Jim Sollars, Portland Women's Basketball-Responses

1. I have heard that you are a fitness fanatic- is that true and what do you do to stay so fit.
I'm not as fit as I'd like to be, but I am a very routine oriented person . During the season I find it hard to condition, but do I try to run every day and lift at least three days a week.

2. What are your expectations in the second half of the conference schedule?
One of the nice things is that we have a lot more home games in the second half of the season. We seem to play better at home so that will be nice for us. I'm hoping we will do much better in the second half conference play.

3. Coach, how important to the team is Khalila and do you think she has a shot at the Player of the Year award. Thanks and good luck down the stretch!
There is no qustion that Khalila is our most valuable player and leads us in several statistical categories. She has been very consistent this season and is an important player for us.

4. What aspect of coaching do you enjoy the most?
That is a difficult question, but the lifelong friends that I have made is one of the best aspects. I also really enjoy seeing our athletes progress and that is also a very enjoyable aspect.

5. Coach Sollars, having coached for so many years, would you say that you have just as much fire for coaching now as you had when you first started and has your philosphy/coaching style changed?
I get just as nervous and uptight about the games and I want to win just as much, but I think I've mellowed a bit. I'm not as boisterous on the bench as I used to be. My coaching philosophy hasn't changed much over the years, although I do approach the season a bit differently. Now I have three assistant coaches where in the past I had none, so they handle much of the day-to-day demands for me.

6. With so many knee injuries occuring so often in women's basketball (especially in the WCC) what can be done about this epidemic? Should knee injuries just be considered a risk of the game? Thanks and good luck with the rest of the season.
There has already been a great deal of research and nothing if definitive right now. I coached for a long time before I had an athletie with an ACL tear. I know there are some strength programs that help, but do not solve the problem. I think it is a part of the game now.

7. Who would be your choice for the Player of the Year award in the WCC and why?
I am not ready to make that decision just yet. I want to see who does well throughout the season, not just half way though it.
