1. Although many coaches have tabbed Vince Cordova as the early favorite for WCC Pitcher of the Year, he hasn't had that much success in his previous years at LMU. If he has improved, why and what has led to such a significant improvement? Great questions. Vince has worked very hard in the off season to get stronger. He has also been focused on improving his mechanics. He used to throw uphill, keeping his ball up in the zone. Now, keeping his shoulders level, Vince is able to get out in front with his delivery, which allows his ball to be down. He is also throwing the curveball with more velocity.
2. What has gotten into Jonathan Oller and what do you attribute his hot start too?
Jon is off to a great start. I believe the pressure from freshman Kyle Mura at 3B has made Jon elevate his game. Nothing is better than having players compete for a position on a daily basis.
3. Is it hard to recruit players with USC and UCLA so close?
Yes. However, we are in the hot bed of baseball in Southern California and there is enough players for everyone. We just have to get out and see more games than the big name schools. Find the diamonds in the rough or get that blue chipper who like the LMU atmosphere. Great education, location, people and baseball.
4. Coach, how good is this LMU team and how far do you think they can go?
We really have to play as a team to be successful. We do not have a player that can carry us. We do have good players who, when they play together, are very good. Pitching and defense have been our strengths and we hope to contend for the WCC title.
5. Coach, for the collegiate game, are you a strong believer in using position players as pitchers as well or should they concentrate on one of the other? Thanks.
Being a school with a very high tuition, we always look for two way players. Any time you find a pitcher who can hit, he becomes a high priority on our recruiting list.
6. Considering that Kyle Huddy and Stephen Kahn have both pitched well in the closer/long relief role, does one have the inside track on the full time closer position or do you think you'll continue to use both?
Kyle Huddy and Stephen Kahn are both very good pitchers with a promising future ahead of them. Kyle is now our Saturday starter and Steve is in relief. Because Kyle is so strong and his arm is able to bounce back, he may see relief in the mid week games.
7. What things will LMU have to improve upon to win the WCC baseball Championship?
Be more consistent with our offensive attack. We need to capitalize on RBI's. We have been getting men on base and leaving them stranded. In a nutshell, clutch hitting.
