WCC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER SELECTED
WOMEN'S SOCCER - Cori Alexander, University of Portland
Sophomore goalkeeper Cori Alexander registered seven shutouts, while only allowing two goals in the month of October to help the Pilots to an 8-1 record. Alexander logged 831:57 minutes in net for the Pilots, posting an impressive .22 goals against average. Alexander tallied 31 saves and recorded a .939 save percentage. Her seven shutouts during October propelled her into sixth place on the Pilots' all-time shutouts charts with 20, while her 0.65 career goals against average also ranks sixth on Portland's career list. With their 8-1 record during the month of October, the Pilots enter the last weekend of play with a 16-3-0 overall record and a 5-1-0 mark in conference play.
MEN'S SOCCER - Armando Melendez, Loyola Marymount University
The junior from Los Angeles, Calif. led Loyola Marymount to a 7-2-1 record during October and a 7-1-1 mark in WCC play. Melendez netted three goals and handed out four assists as the Lions have been in first place for the entire month and have finished the first half of conference play unbeaten. Melendez collected game-winning goals in victories over San Diego and then-No. 2 Santa Clara. The midfielder assisted on game-winning goals against San Francisco and Portland. Melendez set-up Sean Rhynard in LMU's key 2-1 victory over USF and then found LJ Reinhardt for a 1-0 win against Portland. Melendez leads the WCC in points during conference matches and is tied for second in assists in conference games.
WOMEN'S GOLF - Rachel Kyono, Pepperdine University
The junior from Medellin, Colombia led Pepperdine to a pair of top 5 finishes in two tournaments. Llano tied for 12th at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Redmond, Wash. and then placed 15th at the Stanford Women's Intercollegiate. Llano shot rounds of 74-80-75 for a 229 at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational as Pepperdine finished fifth. She then totaled a score of 216 with rounds of 70-74-72 to help Pepperdine finish second at the Stanford Intercollegiate. In six rounds, Llano has posted a 74.17 stroke average.
MEN'S GOLF - Michael Putnam, Pepperdine University
The senior from Tacoma, Wash. posted a pair of top 10 finishes during the month of October. Putnam placed second at The Club Glove Intercollegiate with a 2-under par score of 214. Putnam shot rounds of 67-70-77 at The Club Glove Intercollegiate held at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif. Putnam then collected an eighth-place tie at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, Tennessee. The All-American totaled rounds of 68-72-71 for a 2-under 211. Putnam helped his team claim The Club Glove Intercollegiate title and a fifth place finish at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions. In six rounds, the senior has produced a 70.83 stroke average. In four tournaments this year, Putnam has a 70.75 stroke average in 12 rounds.
VOLLEYBALL -Devon Forster, University of San Diego
The senior outside hitter from Boulder, Colo. led San Diego to an impressive 10-0 record in the month of October, including nine straight WCC victories. The Toreros sit alone atop the conference standings with a perfect 9-0 record. San Diego also beat two ranked WCC opponents in October in then-No. 12 Santa Clara and then-No. 14 Saint Mary's. Forster was a tremendous offensive force for the Toreros during that stretch, tallying 188 kills and 13 service aces. Forster led the WCC in kills per game for the month with 5.53 and points per game with 6.16. Forster also ranked third in the conference in service aces per game with 0.38, and 10th in hitting percentage with a .289 clip. Forster also averaged 2.4 digs per game in October. Forster posted 20 or more kills in four of the 10 matches in the month, and recorded two double-doubles. In the two key WCC victories over Santa Clara and Saint Mary's, Forster averaged 4.75 kills per game, 2.25 digs per game, and 0.75 blocks per game. For her efforts, Forster was named WCC Volleyball Player of the Week on Oct. 26 after sweeping the weekend set with Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
