University of Portland women's tennis player Adele Rockett and Pilot women's soccer players Lindsey Huie and Jennifer Tuttle have been named 2005 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars as announced by Black Issues In Higher Education.
Rockett was named to the Women's Tennis Sports Scholar first-team. A sophomore from Wailuku, Hawaii, Rockett is a Biology major with a 3.64 cumulative grade-point average. A walk-on to the UP tennis squad, Rockett currently posts an overall singles record of 6-12 and doubles mark of 2-6 in 2004-05 entering the West Coast Conference Championships.
Huie, a first-team All-America selection on the pitch as a junior midfielder, was named to the Women's Soccer Sports Scholar third-team. Huie scored nine goals and distributed 14 assists while leading UP to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2004. The Mission Viejo, Calif. native is a Psychology major with a 3.27 cumulative grade-point average.
Tuttle joined Huie as a third-team Sports Scholar honoree. The sophomore forward played in 22 games for the Pilots last season, made 12 starts and recorded four assists. A native of Cupertino, Calif., Tuttle is a Biology major with a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average.
Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
