Pepperdine And San Diego Prepare For NCAA Regionals

The Pepperdine University men's and women's tennis teams and the University of San Diego men's tennis team turn their attention to the NCAA Men's and Women's Division I Tennis Championships beginning this Friday, May 13. The Pepperdine men garnered the No. 8 overall seed and was selected as one of the 16 host schools for the first and second rounds. The three other schools that the Waves will host at the Ralphs-Stratus Tennis Center are San Diego, Stanford, and UC Irvine. Pepperdine will face UC Irvine on May 14 at 10:00 am, while the Toreros will take on the Cardinal later that day at 2:00 pm in first round action. The Waves' women's team will travel to Atlanta, GA to face Mississippi State in the first round on May 13. Should the Waves advance, they would face either site host Georgia Tech or Winthrop in the second round. First and second round competition will be conducted May 13-15 with the winner of each site advancing to the NCAA Division I Championships. The men's championship will be held on May 21-24 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas with Texas A&M University, serving as host. The women's championships will be held on May 19-22 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia.

NCAA Championship Notes

Pepperdine Men's Tennis - Waves' Record: 21-2
The Waves enter the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship as the No. 8 overall seed ... Pepperdine, ranked No. 9 in the final regular season ITA poll, is one of 16 institutions which will serve as a host for the first and second rounds. The Waves will host No. 22 Stanford, No. 39 San Diego and UC Irvine. Pepperdine will face UC Irvine in the first round. If the Waves are able to advance, they would face the winner of the Stanford-San Diego match in the second round ... Pepperdine played all three opponents earlier this season, posting a perfect 3-0 record. The Waves defeated UC Irvine, 5-2, in early February, Stanford, 4-3, in mid-April and San Diego, 4-2, at the WCC Championships in late April ... Pepperdine's only losses this season are a pair of 4-3 setbacks versus No. 21 USC and No. 1 Baylor ... The Waves are led by two of the best players in the WCC in juniors Pedro Rico and Scott Doerner. Rico, ranked No. 25, currently holds a 14-6 dual match record, while Doerner, the 2005 WCC Player of the Year, is ranked No. 34 and owns an 18-4 record. Both Rico and Doerner will participate in the men's singles championship and will team up in the doubles championship. The duo is ranked No. 7 in the final regular season ITA poll.

San Diego Men's Tennis - Toreros' Record: 16-6
The Toreros are making their third consecutive trip to the NCAA men's tennis championship ... San Diego is ranked No. 39 in the final regular season ITA poll ... The Toreros will take on perennial national powerhouse Stanford in the first round held in Malibu on the Pepperdine University campus. The Cardinal are ranked No. 22 in the final regular season ITA poll ... The Toreros and the Cardinal squared off earlier this season with Stanford earning a 7-0 win ... USD owns just a 1-18 all-time record versus the Cardinal ... The Toreros reached the finals of the West Coast Conference Championship for the fifth consecutive year, falling to Pepperdine, 4-2 ... Since starting the season off with an 0-3 record, the Toreros have played as well as any team in the country, posting a 16-3 record ... San Diego boasts one of the top players in the country in junior Pierrick Ysern. Ysern is the highest ranked WCC player, coming in at No. 10 in the latest ITA poll. The Paris, France native also garnered one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA men's singles championship. As a result, Ysern is just the third USD men's tennis player to earn All-American status, joining Scott Lipton (1980) and Jose Luis Noriega (1989-1992).

Pepperdine Women's Tennis - Waves' Record: 14-8
The Pepperdine Waves are in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship for the 18th consecutive season ... The Waves will travel to Atlanta, GA to face Mississippi State in the first round on May 13. Should the Waves advance, they would face either site host Georgia Tech or Winthrop in the second round ... The Pepperdine women claimed another WCC championship in 2005 after posting a 14-8 record. Bianca Dulgheru was named the WCC "Freshman of the Year", becoming the sixth consecutive Wave to earn the honor ... Pepperdine Head Coach Gualberto Escudero reached an unprecedented coaching milestone during this year's WCC Championship. Escudero recorded his 500th career win in the Waves' semifinal victory over Saint Mary's on April 23rd. In 28 seasons at the helm, Escudero has complied a 501-254 (.664) ... In addition to the Waves team advancing to the NCAA Championships, Dulgheru, the No. 29 ranked player in the final regular season ITA poll, earned a bid into the NCAA women's singles championship.
