SAN BRUNO, Calif. - With the West Coast Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament just around the corner, the WCC takes a look back at some of the event's all-time great performers. Each weekday, leading up to the day before the championships begin (March 1), the WCC will recognize one male and one female former student-athlete for their achievements during the WCC Tournament. This year's event marks the 20th anniversary of the men's tournament and the 15th anniversary of the women's tournament.
WCC Tournament All-Time Great Performers: Day 1
GONZAGA - Dan Dickau (2001-02)
Dan Dickau made the most of his two WCC Tournaments, becoming just the second player in conference history to take home two tournament MVP awards.
In 2001, Dickau averaged 21.7 points per game in leading the Zags to the tournament title. He dropped in a game-high 25 points in the tournament finale versus Santa Clara en route to MVP honors.
The following year, the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs faced the No. 1 seeded Pepperdine Waves in the tournament final. With the Zags trailing 45-44 at the half, Dickau poured in 27 second half points to propel Gonzaga to a thrilling 96-90 win over the Waves, earning his second consecutive tournament MVP honor.
SANTA CLARA - Melissa King (1992-93)
Toso Pavilion was the site of the first-ever WCC Tournament for women's basketball, and junior Melissa King made sure it was a memorable one for the host Broncos.
King, who is SCU's all-time leading scorer and ranks third on the WCC's career scoring list with 1,798 points, dropped in a single-game record 30 points as the top-seeded Broncos knocked off Bay Area rival USF in the 1992 championship game, 67-62. The 30-point effort remained a WCC Tournament record until Gonzaga's Jessica Malone scored 33 points during a first round contest in 2001.
King was also named to the WCC all-tournament team after leading SCU to the championship game in 1993.
