SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- University of Portland senior guard Pooh Jeter was named the West Coast Conference men's basketball co-player of the week on Tuesday along with Gonzaga University forward Adam Morrison. Jeter averaged 22.0 points, 6.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds in leading the Pilots to road wins over Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
The Gardena, Calif. and Junipero Serra High School native put on a show for his hometown friends and family over the weekend. On Saturday, Jeter recorded 18 points, nine assists and five rebounds as Portland dealt Pepperdine an 81-76 loss in Malibu. His 65-foot buzzer beater at halftime propelled Portland to a two-point lead and he added four second-half assists.
On Monday at LMU, Jeter ignited a furious second-half rally with 20 points after the break as the Pilots overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and won 71-59. He finished with 26 points and four assists for the game. Jeter drained three consecutive NBA-range three-pointers midway through the second half to put the Pilots ahead for good.
The wins provided Portland its first WCC weekend road sweep since the opening of the 2001 conference slate and first road sweep of Pepperdine and LMU since the 1980-81 season.
Morrison, meanwhile, collected his sixth conference player of the week honor after averaging 35.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins over LMU and Pepperdine.
Jeter and the Pilots will conclude the regular season with a pair of home games at the Chiles Center. Portland (10-16, 4-8 WCC) is still in the running for a first-round bye in the WCC Tournament with two wins. The Pilots will host San Francisco on Saturday at 7 p.m. and San Diego on Monday at 7 p.m.
The Monday, Feb. 27 game against the Toreros will be Senior Night as Jeter, Donald Wilson and Darren Cooper will be recognized and honored prior to tip-off. The game is also police and firefighter appreciation night as the Pilots and the Portland Police Sunshine Division are teaming up for a food drive. Fans will receive $2 off the price of admission at the door with the donation of a nonperishable food item.
