WCC In The ITA Rankings
The WCC is well represented in the most recent Fila ITA rankings released on February 22. On the women's side, Pepperdine checked in at No. 23 in the team listings, while San Diego was ranked No. 63. Saint Mary's earned the program's first-ever national ranking on February 14 with a No. 75 listing, and remained in that spot in the most recent ranking. Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru remained the highest ranked WCC singles competitor at No. 26, and San Diego's Emma Murphy, the two-time WCC Player of the Year, was ranked No. 100. A pair of doubles tandems from Pepperdine are ranked among the nation's elite, with Dulgheru and Eva Dickes ranked No. 20, and the duo of Merve Asimgil and Sylvia Kosakowski checking in at No. 44. Pepperdine is the top-ranked squad on the men's side, ascending to a No. 2 national ranking after an impressive showing at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Also listed in the most recent rankings is San Diego, which checked in at No. 29. Three Waves were ranked among the top-87 singles players, with Scott Doerner earning a No. 7 rank, with teammate Pedro Rico is listed at No. 11 and Ivor Lovrak at No. 87. USD's Pierrick Ysern is ranked No. 51 in the listing. The Pepperdine doubles tandem of Doerner and Andre Begemann earned a No. 4 ranking following four straight wins last week.
Pepperdine Takes Second At National Team Indoors
Pepperdine reeled off victories over Florida State, then-No. 5 Mississippi, and then-No. 9 Duke before falling to Georgia in the final of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle. The Waves narrowly missed out on the program's third indoor crown, and first since 1986.
Returning Stars
Four All-WCC performers from the 2005 men's championship return this season, while four women's all-conference netters also return to their respective teams. Headlining the list on the men's side is 2005 WCC Player of the Year Scott Doerner, who along with teammate Pedro Rico, captured all-conference honors in singles and as a doubles tandem. Also returning this season is San Diego's Pierrick Ysern, the NCAA singles runner-up a year ago, and Saint Mary's senior Julien Tizot. On the women's side, two-time WCC Player of the Year Emma Murphy returns for her senior season at San Diego and is joined by All-WCC doubles partner Lauren Perl. 2005 WCC Freshman of the Year Bianca Dulgheru returns to Malibu, along with Caroline Raba and her all-conference doubles partner Sylvia Kosakowski. Saint Mary's Aude Lambert rounds out the All-WCC returners on the women's side along with her all-conference doubles partner, Jessica Hoath.
WCC Championships Slated For April 21-23
The WCC Tennis Championships return to the Bay Area in 2006, with the women's tournament being held at Santa Clara University and the men's event slated to be held on the campus of Saint Mary's College. The Pepperdine's men's program has claimed 15 straight conference titles, while the Waves' women's squad will be aiming for its fourth straight WCC Crown.
WCC Team Notes
Gonzaga Bulldogs
- The Gonzaga men's and women's teams have struggled in the early going, but the Bulldog men's squad recorded its first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Idaho on Sunday.
- Cooper Fratt has been impressive on the men's side, registering victories at the No. 4 singles position against Whitman, Nevada, and Idaho so far this season.
- Emily Anderson has played at the No. 1 singles spot in all six of the Bulldogs' dual matches so far this season. She has accounted for three of Gonzaga's four team points this season, recording wins against Wyoming, Santa Clara, and Idaho.
- The Gonzaga men will not play another dual match at home until April 1, beginning a 12-match away string against UC Davis (2/24). The Gonzaga women will hit the road for a seven-match stretch that includes contests at Portland (3/17), Saint Mary's (3/18), and USF (3/19).
Loyola Marymount Lions
- The LMU men's team began the season with a 6-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo before hitting a six-match skid, while the women's team is coming off of a weekend in which it posted its first two wins of the season.
- Matt Phillips and Carlos Malet enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, as both players picked up wins in singles play against Hawaii-Hilo and Hawaii. Reyniere Roxas notched his first win at the No. 6 singles spot in LMU's 6-1 loss to Cal Poly.
- Pavla Mesterova has led the Lions at the No. 1 singles spot, registering four wins at the top position, including victories in Lion wins over Cal State Fullerton and Hawaii. Mesterova teamed with Robyn Baker to win three straight doubles contests at the No. 1 spot over the weekend.
- The LMU men are in the midst of a nine-match homestand, which includes an upcoming match with Gonzaga (3/16). The Lion women head to the UNLV Invitational this weekend.
Pepperdine Waves
- Pepperdine's No. 2 ranked men's team reeled off 13 straight wins to begin the season before falling to then-No. 2 ranked Georgia in the final of the ITA Indoor Championship. The women's squad remains undefeated at 6-0, and has earned a No. 23 ITA ranking.
- Scott Doerner is the highest ranked WCC player at No. 7 in the ITA listing and has posted a 10-2 dual match record at the No. 1 singles spot this season. Doerner has teamed with Andre Begemann to notch a 13-1 mark at the No. 1 doubles spot, including a 4-0 mark at the National Team Indoors. The duo is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation.
- The Waves have dominated the competition on the women's side, with Eva Dickes posting a 6-0 dual match record, while No. 26 ranked Bianca Dulgheru, Natalie Braverman, and Sylvia Kosakowski have all gone 5-1 in dual match play.
- Pepperdine's men return home in March, while the women host San Diego State (2/23).
Portland Pilots
- Portland's men's squad has notched a 5-5 record after winning its last two dual matches, and the women's team will be looking for its first victory this weekend.
- Matthew Loucks has led the Pilot men's team at the No. 1 singles position, posting a 5-4 record in dual matches. Loucks also picked up a straight set win at the No. 2 spot in Portland's 7-0 sweep of Gonzaga on February 5.
- Cristin Sammis recorded Portland's only singles victory in dual match play so far this season, notching a three-set win at the No. 3 spot in Portland's 6-1 loss to WCC rival Santa Clara.
- Portland's men's team travels to Albuquerque, NM for three matches in early March, while the women's squad will host Long Beach State (2/26).
Saint Mary's Gaels
- Saint Mary's men's team has posted a 2-4 mark in dual matches this season, while the women's team has gone 3-3 and earned the program's first-ever national ranking at No. 75 after defeating Pacific on February 11, 4-1.
- Achim Christner has given the Gaels a lift, posting a 4-2 record while playing at the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions. Christner has won two straight matches at the No. 5 spot, earning wins against Pacific and UC Davis.
- The SMC women's team posted the program's first-ever win over a ranked opponent when it defeated then-No. 63 Pacific. After losing her first two matches at the No. 1 singles position this season, Aude Lambert has rebounded to win four straight contests in dual match play.
- Saint Mary's men's team is in the midst of a seven-match homestand, while the women's team will play its first home match against WCC rival San Francisco on March 3.
San Diego Toreros
- San Diego's No. 29 ranked men's squad rebounded from a loss to UCLA to reel off six straight dual match wins before falling at TCU last weekend, 4-1. The No. 63 ranked women's team has posted a 3-2 mark so far, including a 5-1 win over WCC rival San Francisco.
- Pierrick Ysern, the 2005 NCAA singles runner-up and currently ranked No. 51 in the nation, has reeled off seven straight victories at the No. 1 singles position to begin the season. His match against TCU did not finish.
- Lauren Perl and No. 100 ranked Emma Murphy have each posted 3-2 marks in dual matches to begin the season. As USD's No. 1 doubles pairing, the duo has notched a 4-1 mark.
- San Diego's men host East Tennessee State (2/23) before embarking on a four-match road trip, while the women's team hosts WCC rival Pepperdine (2/25).
San Francisco Dons
- San Francisco's men's team dropped to 3-6 following a three-match road trip to New Mexico, while the women's team claimed its fifth win in its last six matches with a 4-3 victory over WCC rival Santa Clara on Monday.
- Matthew Berry has played at the No. 1 singles spot in all nine of USF's dual matches this season, posting a 3-6 mark including a win against WCC rival LMU. Berry has teamed with Korbinian Kramer at the No. 1 doubles position to go 3-3 in dual matches.
- The women's squad has gotten outstanding production from the bottom of the singles lineup, as the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 spots have combined to post a 19-1 record. Sarah Oudomvilay is 7-0 at the No. 7 spot, while Mylene Martin has gone 6-0 at the No. 5 position.
- Four of the next five matches will be at home for the San Francsico men's squad, while the women's team meets WCC rival Saint Mary's on the road in early March.
Santa Clara Broncos
- Santa Clara's men's team evened its record to 6-6 with a 6-1 win over San Francisco on February 15, while the women's squad has posted a 3-7 overall mark including a pair of wins over WCC opponents.
- The Bronco men have gotten outstanding production at the No. 5 singles spot, as four players have combined to notch an 11-1 record in dual matches. Tommy Hicks has notched a 5-1 mark at the No. 5 position, and a 9-3 overall record in dual match play.
- The SCU women's squad has played four WCC opponents so far this season, and notched victories over Portland and Gonzaga. Casey Knutson posted singles victories against the Pilots and San Francisco, and has notched a 5-3 dual match mark so far this season.
- Santa Clara's men's team will host two dual matches in early March, while the women's squad is in the midst of a four-match homestand.
