WCC IN THE 2016 NCAA TOURNAMENT
SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- For the eighth consecutive season, at least three West Coast Conference teams have advanced to the NCAA Postseason and all were well represented on the 2016 All-WCC teams as No. 4 BYU, No. 19 Pepperdine and Santa Clara combined for 11 of 22 total spots on the first and second teams.
BYU's Michele Vasconcelos became the third straight Cougar to earn WCC Player of the Year honors while teammate Taylor Isom became just the second Cougar to ever be honored as the WCC Defensive Player of the Year. Pepperdine's Hannah Seabert was tabbed as the first Wave to ever be named the WCC Goalkeeper of the Year, and Santa Clara's Gudrun Arnardottir was selected as the WCC Freshman of the Year.
Pepperdine's Tim Ward collected WCC Coach of the Year honors for the third time in the last six seasons after leading the Waves to the WCC regular season title.
All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's 10 head coaches.
Vasconcelos is the fourth Cougar in five seasons to take home WCC Player of the Year honors, joining Nadia Gomes (2015), Ashley Hatch (2014) and Lindi Lisonbee Cutshall (2012). Vasconcelos finished the season as one of the most productive players in the country after leading the NCAA in assists per game (0.67), finishing fourth nationally in points per game (2.22) and 13th nationally in goals per game (0.78). Her 12 assists on the year were one shy of the national leader, and she registered 40 points total, good for sixth in the NCAA. In conference play, Vasconcelos was even more dangerous and led the WCC in goals (7), assists (7) and points (21) -- eight more points than the next person on the list. The senior also shot at an astounding .359 clip on 14 total goals scored.
Isom was named Defensive Player of the Year in a season that saw her play all 19 games for a Cougars team that tied for the league-lead in goals allowed (2), goals against average (0.22) and shutouts (7). The junior defender also scored the game-winning goal in BYU's win at rival Utah.
Seabert was named the Goalkeeper of the Year in a season that saw her lead the WCC with a commanding 0.22 goals against average after allowing only two goals in 825 minutes played. She posted the top save percentage in the league at .917 and collected a total of 22 saves on the year. Seabert finished with two shutouts more than her closest competitor with six in nine conference games. The Goalkeeper of the Year award was instituted in 2011 and Seaberts is the first Wave to capture the honor.
Arnardottir becomes the first Bronco to be named the Freshman of the Year since fellow defender Julie Johnston claimed the honor in 2010. Arnardottir is the ninth Bronco to be named the WCC Freshman of the Year and the fifth of that group to be a defender. She was one of only three Santa Clara players to start all 19 games and anchored a backline that allowed just six goals in league play while registering four shutouts.
Ward guided the Waves to the WCC regular season title with a 7-1-1 conference record, returning the league's automatic bid to Malibu for the first time since the 2011 season. His team rattled off a seven-game unbeaten streak to begin conference play and were the only league team to go unbeaten on the road. The Waves were initially picked to finish third in the league in the preseason poll.
