SAN BRUNO, Calif. - 25 West Coast Conference baseball student-athletes from all ten member institutions heard their name called in this year’s MLB Draft, including five in the top ten rounds.
WCC Draft Bullets
- 5 WCC student-athletes were chosen in the top ten rounds from four different WCC schools, including two of Santa Clara’s four overall picks
- WCC baseball student-athletes were drafted into 15 different Major League parent clubs
- Three WCC schools each had four student-athletes drafted: Saint Mary’s, San Diego and Santa Clara
- WCC Draftees by school: Saint Mary’s (4), San Diego (4), Santa Clara (4), Gonzaga (3), BYU (2), Loyola Marymount (2), Pepperdine (2), San Francisco (2), Pacific (1), Portland (1)
- All-WCC First Team pitcher Casey Legumina of Gonzaga was one of two WCC sophomore student-athletes selected in this year’s draft
- San Diego pitcher Paul Richan was the highest WCC draft pick at 78th to the Chicago Cubs in the second round, marking the seventh straight year a WCC student-athlete has gone in the first two rounds
- WCC Draftees by League: American (15); National (10)
- WCC Draftees by Position: Catchers (3), Infielders (8), Outfielders (4), Pitchers (10)
- 2018 WCC Player of the Year Jordan Qsar of Pepperdine went in the 25th round, 750th overall to the Tampa Bay Rays
