Saint Mary’s Thornton (Pitcher); Portland’s Hawken (Player) Earn Rawlings WCC Weekly Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Rawlings Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for April 22, 2019.
 
WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PITCHER OF THE WEEK – TYLER THORNTON, FR., RHP – SAINT MARY’S
Freshman righthander Tyler Thornton produced career-numbers on Thursday afternoon and shut down the WCC-leading Loyola Marymount Lions in the series-opener. Thornton tossed a career-high, 8.0 innings pitched, allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out 12 (matches a career-high). The righty struck out the first five batters he faced and seven of the first nine.
 
This is the first WCC weekly honor for Thornton and the third overall for the Gaels’ staff this season.

WEST COAST CONFERENCE RAWLINGS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – CODY HAWKEN, SR., OF – PORTLAND
Senior outfielder Cody Hawken hit .417 (5-for-12) for the weekend and claimed a home run, two doubles, a team-high eight RBI’s, and two runs scored during a three-game league series at San Diego. On Saturday, Hawken hit a grand slam, and he added a pair of doubles to finish 3-for-5 with seven RBI’s, which is tied for the third most RBI’s in a game by a Pilot in program history. He was also flawless in the field recording 10 putouts, and he stole a base.
 
During Thursday’s opener, Hawken was hit by a pitch, which gives him 44 HBP’s in his career, matching the program’s all-time career record.
