28 student-athletes post GPAs of 3.5 or better

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL | ALL-WCC TEAM

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference is pleased to announce the 2019 West Coast Conference Baseball All-Academic Team.

Two WCC student-athletes on the all-academic squad earn academic honors for the third consecutive season: Gonzaga's Daniel Fredrickson (Mechanical Engineering) and LMU’s Brandon Shearer (Entrepreneurship). Pepperdine’s Matthew Kanfer and San Francisco’s Riley Ornido both appear on the list for the second straight year.

Three honorees were also selected to the 2019 CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 squad: BYU’s Jackson Cluff, Fredrickson and San Francisco’s Jack Winkler.

All told, 10 West Coast Conference baseball student-athletes posted a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or better and a whopping 28 posted a GPA of 3.50 or better. Pacific’s Nate Verlin owns an unblemished 4.0 GPA in an engineering Master’s program after compiling a 3.75 GPA in engineering as an undergraduate.

At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.

No fewer than 59 WCC student-athletes met the academic criteria for baseball.
Portland led all programs with 12 student-athletes meeting the minimum academic standards for consideration, followed by San Francisco (9), BYU (7) and Pacific (7).
