SAN MATEO, Calif. – Pepperdine, the No. 1 team in the nation at the end of the 2019-20 season, was the unanimous pick in the 2020-21 WCC Men’s Golf Preseason Coaches Poll.
The Waves, No. 1 at the end of 2019-20 and currently No. 1 in the nation according to the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, collected eight first-place votes for 64 points, the highest possible total in the preseason poll. San Francisco received one first-place vote and 54 points and was followed by San Diego (49), Saint Mary’s (46) and BYU (32). Loyola Marymount (29), Santa Clara (24), Pacific (15) and Gonzaga (11) round out the poll.
The preseason poll and All-WCC team were selected solely by a vote of the conference's nine head coaches. Coaches cannot vote for their own teams and student-athletes.
Pepperdine placed six golfers on the 2020-21 All-WCC Preseason Men's Golf Team, headlined by 2019-20 All-American William Mouw. Fellow Waves Clay Feagler, Joe Highsmith, Joshua McCarthy, Dylan Menante and Joey Vrzich joined Mouw on the preseason team. The squad was rounded out by a player each from Saint Mary’s, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
Feagler, Highsmith and MacCarthy are three of six repeats from the 2019-20 preseason team. Blake Hatchcoat from Saint Mary’s, Matt McCarty from Santa Clara and Tim Widing (a 2019-20 All-American) of San Francisco were also recognized prior to the 2019-20 campaign. All six players also earned All-WCC First Team honors in 2018-19.
