SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Four West Coast Conference men’s golf teams earned NCAA Regional selections, as the field was announced on Wednesday. The West Coast Conference, recognized as the fifth-best league in collegiate men’s golf with three teams represented in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll, has had multiple teams selected to the NCAA Regionals in each of the last 10 events, including four bids in three of the last four years.
West Coast Conference champion Pepperdine, along with Pacific, San Diego and Santa Clara, earned NCAA Regional bids. Sam Renner of Washington State, and Cade Anderson and Mason Snyder of LMU earned selections as individuals, giving the West Coast Conference a total of six teams represented in NCAA Regionals.
Pepperdine, which earned the West Coast Conference’s automatic bid by winning the West Coast Conference Championship this past weekend, is the No. 4 seed in the Amherst Regional, which will be played at Poplar Grove Golf Club. The 13-team Amherst Regional in order of seeding is No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Oklahoma, No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Tennessee, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Arkansas, No. 10 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 11 Kent State, No. 12 Princeton and No. 13 Howard.
The Waves, who captured the 2021 NCAA Championship, are ranked No. 19 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings. West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year Mahanth Chirravuri captured conference medalist honors this past weekend. He ranks No. 47 in the latest individual rankings. Chirravuri tied teammate Kristoffer Kuvaas at 15-under after stroke play at the West Coast Conference Championship, defeating Kuvaas in a playoff for the conference individual title. Pepperdine has four top five finishes in seven tournaments this spring.
San Diego earned an NCAA Regional bid for the fifth consecutive season. The Toreros are the No. 7 seed in the Reno Regional, which will be played at Montreux Golf and Country Club.
San Diego is No. 40 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings. USD owns three tournament wins this season, capturing the crown at the Nick Watney Invitational and The Prestige this spring, and the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational this past fall. Sophomore Ryan Abuan, who earned medalist honors at The Prestige, is ranked No. 151 nationally. Last season, the Toreros placed seventh in their regional, while Andi Xu finished second and advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Santa Clara earned its first NCAA Regional selection since 2018. The Broncos join San Diego in the Reno Regional, where they will be the No. 8 seed.
Santa Clara finished third in stroke play and advanced to the match play semifinals of the West Coast Conference Championship this past weekend. The Broncos are No. 45 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clippd rankings. Sophomore J.P. Odland is ranked No. 161 in the latest individual rankings, while West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, Matthew Robles, ranks No. 176 nationally.
The 14-team Reno Regional in order of seeding is No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 Alabama, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Mississippi State, No. 6 BYU, No. 7 San Diego, No. 8 Santa Clara No. 9 California, No. 10 Grand Canyon, No. 11 Sam Houston State, No. 12 East Tennessee State, No. 13 Central Arkansas, No. 14 Fairfield.
Pacific earned its first NCAA Regional selection since 2013, when the Tigers were a member of the Big West Conference. Pacific is the No. 10 seed in the Urbana Regional, which will be played at Atkins Golf Club. The 13-team Urbana Regional in order of seeding is No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Illinois, No. 4 Texas Tech, No. 5 Long Beach State, No. 6 UNLV, No. 7 Houston, No. 8 Marquette, No. 9 Troy, No. 10 Pacific, No. 11 NC State, No. 12 Illinois State and No. 13 Wright State.
The Tigers are No. 60 in the latest SCOREBOARD by Clipdd national rankings. Pacific finished in a tie for fourth during stroke play and earned a spot in the semifinals of match play during a playoff at the West Coast Conference Championship this past weekend. Sophomore Carlos Astiazaran, who is ranked No. 70 nationally in the individual rankings was voted the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Year. He recorded the lowest stroke average (69.3) in program history during 36 rounds in the regular season. Head coach John Cook was voted the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year after leading the program to two tournament wins and six top three finishes this year.
Renner, Anderson and Snyder, who were each All-West Coast Conference selections, will compete as individuals in the Bremerton Regional at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
Renner boasts a program-record 70.45 scoring average this season for Washington State. He is No. 108 in the SCOREBOARD by Clippd individual rankings, earning medalist honors twice this year.
Snyder, ranked No. 170 in the SCOREBOARD by Clippd individual rankings, finished in a tie for 14th at 7-under in the West Coast Conference Championship during stroke play. He finished fourth at the Thunderbird Collegiate earlier in April.
Anderson, ranked No. 190 in the SCOREBOARD by Clippd individual rankings, finished in a tie for third at 12-under in the West Coast Conference Championship during stroke play. He owns three top 10 performances this season.
The NCAA Regionals will take place May 12-14, with the championship held May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals (not on those teams) will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals (not on those teams). The top five teams at each of the six regionals and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
