San Diego claims top spot in WCC Preseason rowing poll

SAN MATEO, Calif. – San Diego rowing has been picked to win the West Coast Conference by a one-point margin in the 2021 WCC Rowing Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Toreros totaed 33 points to take first while Gonzaga tallied 32 points. Both schools received three first-place votes while LMU finished third with one first-place vote and 28 points. The next four teams in the poll are Portland (18 points), Creighton (14), Saint Mary’s (13) and Santa Clara (9).

The 2020 WCC Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gonzaga had won four-straight WCC titles from 2016 to 2019.

The coaches poll was selected solely by a vote of the conference's seven head coaches. Coaches cannot vote for their own teams.

The All-WCC Preseason Rowing Team is made up of 17 athletes from the WCC’s seven member institutions. Three of those athletes, Lauren McCallum and Zoe Calambokidis from Gonzaga, and Kadee Sylia from San Diego, were named to the 2019 All-WCC squad.
