The Pepperdine men's golf team completed one of the biggest comebacks in West Coast Conference Championships history on Saturday to win its second straight title, while sophomore RJ Manke captured medalist honors via a playoff.
 
The Waves stood in seventh place after Thursday's first round, but moved up to second place, two shots back of San Francisco, after an outstanding Friday round. Pepperdine shot a 4-under 284 today, which put them at a 13-under 851 (289-278-284) at the par-72 Reserve at Spanos Park, three shots better than USF.
 
WCC MEN’S GOLF HISTORY
Pepperdine is the defending WCC Champion after capturing its 20th title in 2019 at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif. The Waves posted one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the event to seize their second straight title. Pepperdine was in seventh place after the opening round facing a 15-shot deficit. In all, the Waves have finished first or second in 26 of the last 33 WCC Championships. San Francisco is second overall with 11 team titles.
 
WCC MEN’S GOLF QUICK CHIPS
  • Two WCC programs are ranked in the top-25 in the most current Golfstat rankings: No. 8 Pepperdine and No. 25 San Francisco. Six of nine WCC teams are in the top 85.
  • Six WCC programs won a total of 13 team tournament titles in 2020-21 led by four victories each by No. 8 Pepperdine and San Francisco. The four triumphs are the most in Waves history, while the Dons won all four of their events during the spring season in six total events. LMU won back-to-back victories in March.
  • Nine WCC student-athletes rank in the top-100 nationally according to Golfstat player rankings headlined by Pepperdine’s Joey Vrzich at No. 20 and Dylan Menante (27).
  • The 2021 WCC Championship field includes two returning All-Americans - Pepperdine sophomore William Mouw (First) and San Francisco senior Tim Widing (HM).
  • Pepperdine entered the 2020-21 campaign ranked No. 1 in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll (1/15/21). The Waves concluded the halted 2019-20 campaign ranked No. 1 in the nation.
  • Two WCC programs enter the 2021 WCC Championship on a team winning streak. Both No. 8 Pepperdine and No. 25 San Francisco won their last regular season event. The Waves secured the prestigious Western Intercollegiate, while the Dons torched the field at the PING Cougar Classic, setting program records finishing at 41-under par. Saint Mary’s tied for the team title at the El Macero Classic, but lost in the playoff. 
  • Pepperdine enters the 2021 as the defending WCC Champion after claiming its second straight title in 2019 behind medalist RJ Manke. The Waves have won a record 20 WCC Championships.
