Santa Clara Tackles Longtime Rival North Carolina Thursday
The 11th-seeded Broncos (9-1) open their 11th foray into the College Cup against a familiar opponent. Santa Clara takes on No. 2 North Carolina Thursday, May 13 at WakeMed Soccer Park with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m. PT on ESPN2. The Tar Heels own a 16-5 edge in the all-time series, but the Broncos have won three of the last four against UNC in the NCAA Tournament, including a 1-0 triumph in the 2001 NCAA Championship game.

No. 11 Broncos Storm to 11th College Cup
The 11th-seeded Broncos (10-1) beat No. 14 seed Clemson (12-5-2) 1-0 Sunday evening in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament at WakeMed Soccer Park to make it to the national semifinals for the first time since 2004. Santa Clara ties UCLA and Florida State, which also advanced Sunday, for the third-most all-time trips to the College Cup.
 
Santa Clara Perfect in WCC Action
Santa Clara rolled through the WCC slate, posting the first unbeaten and untied record (7-0-0) since Portland accomplished the feat going 7-0-0 in three consecutive years from 2007-09. In the process, the Broncos collected their 11th WCC regular season championship
 
Cougars and Broncos Qualify for NCAAs
BYU made its eighth NCAA Tournament field as a WCC member while WCC Champion Santa Clara made its 30th all-time appearance and 11th in the last 12 seasons. Both the Cougars (No. 12) and the Broncos (No. 11) captured national seeds. Since 2015, four WCC programs have won 21 NCAA Tournament matches: BYU (5), LMU (2), Pepperdine (2) & Santa Clara (12).  
 
WCC WOMEN’S COLLEGE CUP NOTES

  • Santa Clara’s 1-0 shutout of No. 14 Clemson was the fourth straight triumph overall for the Broncos and their second straight NCAA Tournament shutout win. Santa Clara has outscored its last four opponents 11-1 and has surrendered just one goal in three NCAA postseason matches in Cary, N.C.
  • Santa Clara is set to make the program’s 11th College Cup appearance and its first since 2004. The 2001 NCAA Champions made their first College Cup appearance in 1989 - the same year  the Santa Clara men’s soccer program shared the NCAA Championship with Virginia.
  • The Broncos previously appeared in the College Cup 1989-90, 1992, 1996-99, 2001-02 & 2004. Portland has appeared in eight College Cups with NCAA Championships in 2002 & 2005. The last College Cup berth for the Pilots came in 2005.  
  • BYU’s Mikayla Colohan, the 2020-21 WCC Offensive Player of the Year, was named a semifinalist for the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Four WCC student-athletes made the initial 2020-21 watch list - Joelle Anderson, Pepperdine; Colohan, BYU; Alexis Loera, Santa Clara & Kelsey Turnbow, Santa Clara.
  • No. 11 Santa Clara ranks in the top-10 in multiple offensive categories, including: assists/game (3rd/2.38), points per game (5th/8.25) and scoring offense (7th/2.60) - as of 5/10/21.
  • No. 12 BYU also ranks in the top-10 in multiple offensive categories, including: assists/game (9th/2.7), points per game (6th/7.90) and scoring offense (3rd/2.94) - as of 5/10/21.
  • Three WCC programs were ranked in the national top-25 polls this season with BYU (No. 17) and Santa Clara (11) in the top-20 in the final regular season edition. Pepperdine spent five weeks in the top-25.
  • No. 11 Santa Clara entered the preseason “Receiving Votes” category and reached as high as No. 9 in week five. The Broncos went unbeaten in WCC play, outscoring opponents 18-4.
