SAN MATEO, Calif. – After a record-shattering West Coast Conference Championship at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., the league is pleased to unveil its 2020-21 All-WCC team and major award winners. All-WCC First Team selections and major individual awards were selected solely by the nine conference head coaches.
Pepperdine’s
Dylan Menante earned WCC Player of the Year honors becoming the third Wave to accomplish the feat and the first since three-time All-American and 2020 National Player of the Year
Sahith Theegala shared the honor as a sophomore in 2016-17. Menante was one of the WCC’s top-ranked golfers in 2020-21 coming in at No. 29 in Golfweek with a stroke average of 70.72 and a 5-10 record in head-to-head vs. top-25 individuals. Menante shared the top spot on the leaderboard (-11) after 54 holes at the WCC Championships before falling on the second playoff hole.
Pepperdine head coach
Michael Beard captured WCC Coach of the Year honors for an unprecedented fifth straight season leading the Waves to a No. 8 national ranking according to Golfstat.com. This follows the COVID-19 shortened 2019-20 team when Pepperdine finished the campaign ranked No. 1 in the nation – a first in program and WCC history.
Beard directed the Waves to a third straight WCC Championship in record-shattering fashion. The Waves set the single-round (19-under), 36-hole (35-under) and 54-hole (49-under) conference championship scoring records. Pepperdine nearly doubled its WCC Championship scoring record of 26-under set in its 2018 team victory. It is the 21st men’s golf title for the Waves.
LMU’s
Riley Lewis is the fourth Lion student-athlete to take WCC Freshman of the Year honors and the first since All-American
Brian Locke in 2006. Riley tied for 11th (-9) in his WCC Championship debut and posted four top-5 finishes including a win at the Sacramento State Invitational.
Pepperdine’s
Clay Feagler became the first two-time WCC medalist in program history after ending regulation at 11-under before beating teammate Dylan Menante on the second playoff hole. Feagler, the 2018 medalist, makes his fourth All-WCC squad – the seventh Wave to accomplish the feat and the first since current PGA Tour pro
Andrew Putnam did so from 2008-11.
San Francisco All-American
Tim Widing also collected first team honors for the fourth time, a first for the Dons. Santa Clara’s
Matt McCarty makes his third All-WCC appearance, while Saint Mary’s
Blake Hathcoat and Pepperdine’s
Joe Highsmith each earned their second honor.
The 2020-21 All-WCC First Team features just two underclassmen to go along with six seniors or grad students. Five student-athletes appearing on the All-WCC First Team rank in the top-50 nationally according to GolfStat.com with 10 in the top-100.
