HENDERSON, Nev. – Fifth-ranked and defending Conference champion Pepperdine claimed its 22nd WCC Men’s Golf Championship Saturday from the Reflection Bay Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. Sophomore Riley Lewis of LMU won the individual championship with a 7-under 209.
In addition to its 22nd WCC title in program history, the Waves have now won the last four consecutive conference championships since 2018, which no championship occurring in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Waves shot a 14-under 847 over the course of the three rounds, including a tournament-best 274 on Saturday. BYU and LMU tied for second at 852 with San Francisco in fourth at 857.
On the individual leaderboard, Lewis held off William Mouw and Joey Vrzich of Pepperdine who both finished a stroke behind Riley at 6-under 210. There was a three-way tie for fourth between Cole Ponich of BYU and Soren Lind and Toby Briggs of San Francisco at 5-under 211.
Lewis becomes the first non-Wave golfer to win the individual title since 2017 when BYU’s Peter Kuest won it. Vrzich briefly held the lead on the 18th but couldn't convert on his attempt on a birdie, putting Lewis back atop the leaderboard.
Weather for the championship round was the best of the weekend with very little wind.
There were 13 eagles over the course of the tournament with Santa Clara leading the way with four.
Pepperdine led the way with 65 birdies, while BYU finished with 61 and LMU with 60. Individually, Mouw paced the field with 17 birdies, followed by San Diego’s Harrison Kingsley with 16.
